Continue ReadingIt’s been a long wait for the start of the 2020/21 New Jersey high school girls basketball season, but teams and fans will have to wait just that bit longer for games to begin as January is now the projected start date.
However, that just gives teams and players even more time to prepare for what will be a jam-packed season with games realistically being played January-March and possibly into April.
Prep Girls Hoops will be there for all of the excitement and has been profiling players to watch up to this point.
The focus goes down to South Jersey in the continuation of a multi-part series, looking at junior standouts to watch this season in the Tri-County Conference.
Ryane Wood, G/F Pennsville Memorial: Wood, as a sophomore, was the unquestionable leader of this Pennsville team, leading in points, steals, assists, made three-pointers and made foul shots. She averaged 13.2 PPG last season with around 3 rebounds, assists and steals per game as well, a really well-rounded player. Pennsville will be relying on Wood to be more of a facilitator this season, but she’s still going to get her fair share of scoring opportunities and should be a dominating force on this team this season.
Jazmine Moore, PF Pennsville Memorial: Moore is a key part of Pennsville’s stacked junior class, someone who came close to a double-digit point average, and was fourth on the team in rebounds in 2019/20. She was also the team leader in blocks, using her size to her advantage when guarding her opponent. She has an overpowering combination of agility and physicality that sets her apart, so expect Moore and junior teammate Jade Hassler to take on the load that graduating senior Hanna Johnston left.
Janazha Clinton, SG/SF Deptford: Clinton has a perfect opportunity to make her place on this roster and possibly in the starting lineup cemented with Angelina Schilling graduating in the spring. The Deptford roster has opened up for her, the fourth-leading scorer on the Spartans in 2019/20, and she’s going to take full advantage of that. She’s a reliable option beyond the arc, having nailed 20 threes last season, and she’s able to create space for her shots really well. Expect Clinton to up her three-point attempts and get into the lane more often this season.
Amaris Bussie, G/F Deptford: Bussie, like Clinton, will benefit greatly from the graduation of Schilling in the spring. She was one of Deptford’s go-to scorers and spark plug players off the bench last season, but she will be competing for a starting spot, if not that 6th woman role. Her game is played inside the perimeter, but she’s also someone who can facilitate and can also create turnovers on defense. Regardless of her role this season, Bussie is expected to see the court much more and will be a game-changer for the Spartans.
Tori Kanuck, PG Delsea: Kanuck was one of the more potent scorers and offensive options for Delsea last season and that’s only going to continue to grow come January and beyond. She excels off the screen, able to dribble drive into the lane or pull up from the elbow for an easy 12-footer. She made her living near the paint and drew contact a lot to get to the foul line. Kanuck will be much more in the spotlight this season with Kamille Orton having graduated in the spring and she’s going to fill the void and then some.
