While North Jersey tends to grab the headlines, there is much competition left unexplored in Central Jersey and South Jersey.
In this new, multi-part series, Prep Girls Hoops takes a look at the Cape-Atlantic Conference, the main high school athletic conference down the Jersey Shore, and in this first part, the focus is on the American Division.
Sanai Garrison-Macon, PG Atlantic City: One of the first things that jumps off the tape watching Garrison-Macon is her ability to get into the lane and score herself or dish it off to a teammate. She has a knack for making things happen with the ball and there’s a reason why Atlantic City went 20-8 last year with her patrolling the point. She can weave through the defenders with ease, she shoots the ball with confidence, and she patrols the perimeter on defense and lets little to no traffic get through. Garrison-Macon’s ceiling is only going up.
Naysha Suarez-Rivera, SG/PG Atlantic City: If there’s a way to get points in the paint through traffic, Suarez-Rivera will find that way. Her and Garrison-Macon have created a very strong guard combo for Atlantic City, as both play an aggressive, but efficient style of basketball. It’s really easy to see why she’s playing so much: she plays hard however long she’s on the court, meaning she’s making blocks on the defensive end and is immediately on the break, getting open for a shot or dishing it off to a teammate. It’s going to be exciting seeing Suarez-Rivera and Garrison-Macon grow together over these next two years because they look unstoppable.
Aaniyah Street, SG/PG Millville: The first thing you notice when you watch Street’s tape is her off-ball defense. She has very strong court awareness and agility that allows her to sprint out, steal a pass, and quickly get on the break, or lay out and sacrifice her body for the ball. That is aggressive basketball in the best way possible, a defensive-minded player who can also play some offense. She’s easily one of Millville’s players to watch this season and she’s going to arguably be the centerpiece of the team come her senior year.
Nijah Tanksley, SG/PG Bridgeton: Tanksley possesses everything you want in a combo guard: great speed, good hands, great handles, excellent court vision, great shooting, and pesky defense. She will find any way she can to get into the lane for a shot or for an excellent shot opportunity for her team. Her aggressive play style is a massive plus and it shows a great level of confidence and maturity for a junior, something that is only going to grow with time.
Ry’NayJah Sydnor, SF/PF Bridgeton: Sydnor likes to have the ball in her hands in close games and clutch situations. She is someone who wants the pressure all on her and welcomes the limelight, which shows significant confidence. She uses her height and her frame to get rebounds on both sides of the ball and especially in the paint on the offensive side. Syndor is making plays to win her team games.
