We looked at some of the top upperclassmen earlier in the week, today I look at a few underclassman who shined in those two games to open the season.
Emilie Fout, 5-10 2024, Arcanum
While the offense will go through the “big 3” of Unger, Fearon and Gray, watch for the emergence of freshman Emilie Fout as the season progresses. I liked her poise for a freshman in her first weekend of action, as she anticipates the ball well and moves well without the ball. She is a heady player for a freshman, able to get to the right spot with a solid all around game. Really like her perimeter game.
Kate Sherman, 6-0 2023, Russia
Russia really opened some eyes with a big win over Arcanum, and it was two key sophomores who looked to make a name for themselves. Kate was a long post who did a nice job in the paint and was effective on the boards. Impressed on how well she moved to get into position. Has a bright future.
Cece Borchers, 5-8 2023, Russia
Another one of Russia’s sophomores who performed well last weekend in the tournament. Cece also moves well and can slash and score in the paint. Very good at the catch-and-shoot and is a smooth player. Good court awareness and both her and Kate are mature for her age on the floor.
Emme Greely, 5-9 2024, Waynesville
A bright future awaits this wing, as Emme is a talented freshman who made the most of her minutes during her varsity debut last week. She is good around the basket and can finish strong at the rim. Defensively, I was impressed how well she anticipated the play. Stepped onto the big stage and played well. Got some minutes on the JV game which set her up to perform in her first varsity game.
Caroline Stupp, 5-4 2024, Waynesville
Wow, what a solid debut for this rising star. LIke Emme, she played some JV on opening night to get her comfortable, then she got into the varsity game and showed a lot of poise and energy. She has excellent court sense and handles the ball very well under pressure. Caroline has good court vision and can find her open teammate for a better shot. Her on-ball D was on point.
Rachel Jacobs, 5-9 2024 Milton Union
One thing I liked about her is her willingness to take what the game gives her and doesn’t seem to force mistakes. She is young but skilled and her game will continue to get better. In her first action of her career, she showed the ability to be strong on the boards and control the rebound. She will need to learn to create her own shot opportunities but that will come with experience. Good poise.
