January is now the expected month that girls basketball will return across the state, adding just a few more well of anticipation for this season.
Prep Girls Hoops has been profiling some of the best talent in New Jersey, and that continues in the newest part of this multi-part series as PGH previews the best junior standouts in the Greater Middlesex Conference.
Ismel Martinez, PF/C New Brunswick: Martinez has double-double superstar written all over her and is going to be the catalyst to New Brunswick’s success starting in January. She averaged 9.4 PPG and 11.2 RPG last season, a force on the inside and a turnover machine on defense. Martinez averaged 2.8 steals per game in 2019/20 and could not only average a double-double, but possibly put up three to four steals per game in 2021. Martinez’s production got overlooked last season for New Brunswick, but she’s going to dominate in every facet of the game this season, so watch out.
Alexandria Tucker, PG/SG New Brunswick: New Brunswick struggled last season, finishing with a 3-23 record. The thin roster was a big part of it, but Tucker is one of the shining spots on this team coming into this year, one of five impact juniors and the second-highest scorer on the team last season. She led the team in made three-pointers and will be expected to take on more of that role as a pure scorer and spark plug for the offense. Tucker should average double-digit points this season for New Brunswick.
Abigail Rodriguez, PG/SG Woodbridge: Rodriguez shows a lot of potential as a combo guard, playing more of the point guard role, and has the ability now to shine in that role. She will be competing for a starting role and should either be Woodbridge’s primary ball-handler or their second-best option. She controls the game tempo well and looks confident running the point. Rodriguez excels well driving in the paint and will be expected to fill the void left by their five-woman senior class that graduated in the spring.
Bailey Timinski, SG/SF Woodbridge: Timinski is going to be relied upon more this season as a transition shooter and a perimeter specialist for Woodbridge, something she was used to last season. She is a consistent and efficient shooter, and over 63 percent of her points last season came from beyond the arc. Woodbridge is losing nearly a third of its three-point shooting coming into January, so Timinski will be seen much more often on the outside and on the wings, coming off a screen or just getting open off-ball.
Kennedy Goncalves, PF/SF Colonia: Goncalves looks to be part of a junior/senior inside tandem for Colonia this season as her and Sabrina Wilson were the go-to forwards in 2019/20. The junior showed a lot of promise last season as a versatile forward and will be encouraged to expand her range from the field, as sophomore Mattison Chiera Mattison Chiera 5'10" | CG Colonia | 2023 State NJ recorded 34 of Colonia’s 37 made three-pointers last season. Goncalves developing as a shooter will make a massive difference and add another dimension to her game.
