By Michael Wholey 12/4/20 9:00 AM EST
The High School season has kicked off. We will check in with teams all around the state with an outlook on their season and a breakdown of some of their top players. This week we take a look at Brooks-DeBartolo Collegiate High School in Tampa, FL.
Team Outlook
Brooks-DeBartolo Collegiate High School looks to make another deep playoff run this year after only losing one player from their successful 2019-2020 season. The Lady Phoenix return five talented seniors from last year’s squad that finished with an overall record of 20-6, making it to the first round of the Regional Tournament before being knocked off by eventual Class 3A FHSAA State Champion Carrollwood Day School. The experience of the Lady Phoenix will be a huge factor to their success this season as four of the five Seniors have been at BDCHS all four years and have tremendous team chemistry.

The Lady Phoenix are not shying away from competition scheduling a number of challenging opponents including Seffner Christian, HB Plant, Braden River, Fort Myers, Northeast, as well as attending some in-state tournaments including the 2020 Tampa Bay Christmas Invitational December 28-31 in Tampa, FL and the 2021 SUTS Report New Years Classic in Coral Springs, FL January 8-9.
Early on as of the publication of this team spotlight, Brooks is undefeated winning their first 3 games versus Clearwater, Cardinal Mooney, and American Collegiate Academy. BDCHS opened their season with a 55-50 win over Clearwater High School. 2021 5’4 Point Guard Ayonna Simmons led the Lady Phoenix with 17 points. Fellow Senior [player_tooltip player_id="145103" first="Amarie" last="Godwin"] chipped in 14 points, 4 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 steals.
Brooks DeBartolo hit the road and defeated Cardinal Mooney High 65-43. 2022 5’8 Guard [player_tooltip player_id="91581" first="Jaela" last="Davis"] led the team with 25 points. 2021 5’8 Guard Trinity Youngblood scored 19 points and grabbed 9 rebounds while fellow [player_tooltip player_id="145105" first="Brionna" last="McClinton"] contributed 8 points, 5 rebounds and 5 steals in the win.
The team picked up their 3rd win vs American Collegiate Academy 77-18 where 2021s Ayonna Simmons, [player_tooltip player_id="220031" first="Amarie" last="Goodwin"], and Trinity Youngblood as well as 2022 [player_tooltip player_id="91581" first="Jaela" last="Davis"] were all in double digits. The team shot 56% from the field with 27 field goals on 17 assists. Expect for this formula to work for Brooks DeBartolo all season as they are a well-balanced team who are likely to have a different high scorer nightly with 3-5 players in double digits, a high assist to field goal ratio, and aggressive team defense that speeds teams up and forces turnovers.
Top Players
2021 5’8 Point Guard [player_tooltip player_id="91530" first="Triniti" last="Youngblood"] (Saint Leo University signee) and 2021 Shooting Guard [player_tooltip player_id="145103" first="Amarie" last="Godwin"] will lead the team offensively and be the vocal leaders of the team. 2021 [player_tooltip player_id="145105" first="Brionna" last="McClinton"] is a “do everything” player who can score in bunches and guard all five positions. 2022 [player_tooltip player_id="91581" first="Jaela" last="Davis"] is a sharp shooter who adds scoring and the ability to hit the long range three from all areas of the court. 2021 Post Ayonna Simmons returns to the court after missing the 2019-2020 season. Simmons brings an inside presence to team that is fairly small and undersized and likely giving up 2-3 inches at several positions vs many of their opponents.
2023s [player_tooltip player_id="166174" first="Maia" last="Lewers"], Aleyna Sherman and Skye Boone-McCloud will contribute to the Phoenix success and make for a deep bench. Lewers is a slashing guard who can hit the open shot and is a tremendous defender.
We will look to cover the entire state. If you would like us to do a preview or scouting report on your team, just email me at WholeyPrepHoops@gmail.com.
