The High School season has kicked off. We will check in with teams all around the state with an outlook on their season and a breakdown of some of their top players. This week we take a look at Dr. Michael Krop High School in Miami, FL.
Team Outlook
Krop Girls Basketball, led by longtime coach Ray Thompson, regrouped from mid-season injuries and finished as District Champions for the first time since 2013 beating Everglades High School in the District Championship and advancing all the way to the Regional Finals before losing to eventual 7A State Champion – Miami High. In 2020-2021, Krop looks to again advance to the regional playoffs where they will likely face perennial power Miami High or newcomer Gulf Coast High School to make a deep run in the playoffs and advance to Lakeland.
Krop will be heavily dependent on its three seniors. Led by two-time 1st Team All-County/2nd Team All-State guard Lindsey Weingard Lindsey Weingard 5'6" | PG Dr Krop | 2021 State FL , 2nd Team All-County guard sharp-shooter Lauryn Hornstein Lauryn Hornstein 5'6" | CG Dr Krop | 2021 State FL and the underrated 6’0 center Emmy Mills, along with junior Neyida Michel who played well while Mills missed most of the middle of last season, Krop will look to win back-to-back District Championships. If Mills plays well and can stay injury-free, the inside-outside game of Mills and Weingard/Hornstein, could bode well for the Krop Lady Lightning.
Top Players
#5 2021 Lindsey Weingard Lindsey Weingard 5'6" | PG Dr Krop | 2021 State FL (Two-Time 1st Team All Miami-Dade 2018-2019 and 2019-2020/2nd Team All State in 2018-2019 and 2019-2020) – Weingard is a high-IQ point guard floor general who scored her 1,000th point last season. Weingard sees the court extremely well and will need to take on a significant role on both sides of the ball this year for the team to succeed. She will be asked to guard opposing teams’ best player. 2019/2020 Stats – 18.5 PPG, 4.3 APG and 3.5 SPG per game
#10 2021 Lauryn Hornstein Lauryn Hornstein 5'6" | CG Dr Krop | 2021 State FL (2nd Team All Miami-Dade 2019-2020) – Hornstein is another high-IQ guard who will need to play well throughout the season. Hornstein, who scored 40 points in the Regional Semifinal Game against Cypress Bay, will need to play consistent throughout the season and maintain her ability to shoot from long distance so Mills can score in the paint. 2019/2020 Stats – 12.9 PPG, 2.0 RPG and 1.7 SPG per game.
#32 2021 Emmy Mills – After only playing in 13 games in 2019-2020, Mills looks to be healthy in 2020-2021 and play a full season. She is one of the county’s most underrated players and when she is playing well, the six-footer is hard to stop and can be counted on for a double-double most nights. 2019/2020 Stats –7.6 PPG and 9.6 RPG.
