Below is a list of guards who are making noise and proving that their stocks are rising soon into the season. Each of these guards have shown glimpses of how elite they will be the rest of the season and beyond. This list consists of guards in the Lakeland Central, West and East conferences.
Lakeland Central: Clayton, Clear Lake, Northwood, Prairie Farm, Shell Lake, Turtle Lake
Lakeland East: Birchwood, Bruce, Cornell, Flambeau, Lake Holcombe, New Auburn, Winter.
Lakeland West: Frederic, Grantsburg, Luck, Siren, Unity, Webster
Kayla Schultz | Northwood | 5’3 Senior
The senior is currently second in scoring in the Lakeland Central conference. She’s an offensive threat that has been scoring at all three levels this season. She is averaging nearly 17 points per game this season and has been so impressive attacking the lane as well as finishing on the perimeter. In a win over Webster and a win over Clayton, Schultz finished with 17 points for her team.
Capri Strom | Bruce | 5’8 Senior
The senior has so much dominance when she is on the floor. She has a tremendous feel for the game and her movements on the offensive end are elite. She’s poised and patient, rarely forcing anything on either end for this Bruce squad. Strom is comfortable on the block but is raising her stock for being able to handle pressure and create a game for herself from the pertimer. In a one point win over Cornell, Strom finished with 17 points for her team.
Lauren Hetfeld | Webster | 5’5 Freshman
Hetfeld had a breakout game in her debut after scoring 16 points in a win over Frederic. Her athleticism is off the charts, she showed many different finishing moves and did extremely well getting herself open. She is savvy with the ball and seems to play very intentionally on the court- not much of what she does is wasted energy. She dominates in transition, both offensively and defensively. Hetfeld has quick downhill speed and ability to maneuver through multiple defenders to finish at the rim.
Marnie Kahl | Prairie Farm | 5’9 Sophomore
Kahl has been an impact player in leading her team to an undefeated season. The sophomore has really stepped up and has been an essential part of the offense for Prairie Farm. She is averaging 15 points per game. Kahl is lethal when attacking the rim and has a quick release to her mid range jumper as well. She’s hit some big three’s as well and will not shy away from taking the pertimer shot with range. In a win over New Auburn, Kahl finished with 19 points.
Lizzie Rosen | Clear Lake | 5’9 Junior
Playing alongside some very impressive teammates, Rosen has been able to stand out for her athleticism and high IQ on the floor. She is averaging 7 points per game and has shown so much upside on the offensive end. Her movement without the ball is exceptional and she works well with her teammates to get them or herself open. She sets hard screens and seals well within the offense. In a win over Turtle Lake, Rosen finished with 14 points.
Abby Bratanich | Flambeau | 5’2 Senior
A floor general for this team, having a player like Bratanich is essential for running a steady and effective offense. A key point guard who can also score the basketball, the senior is a player to watch as the season goes on. She can score well from the pertimer and surprisingly needs very little room to knock it down. In a win against New Auburn, she finished with 15 points for her team.
Courtney Tarman | Turtle Lake | 5’5 Sophomore
A key guard for this Turtle Lake squad, Tarman has shown tremendous play making ability so far this season. She can score the ball if necessary and will hopefully incorporate more shooting into her play. She is averaging 6 points per game. In a win over Clayton she scored 10 points. She has impressive handles and ability to keep her eyes up and head on a swivel the entire game. She isn’t frazzled by pressure and has a well developed hesitation dribble that often tricks defenders. A defensive standout herself as well, Tarman does an excellent job causing turnovers with her high energy full court pressure.
Hailey Coss | Winter | 5’8 Sophomore
Coss has improved her confidence this season and seems much more comfortable handing the ball and creating her own shot. She’s added some range to her game and has been attempting more mid range shots as well. Coss is a player that is so effective going downhill and has many finish moves in her bag. She is averaging 14 points per game for Winter. In a win over Frederic, Coss finished with 25 points
Zoey Rada | New Auburn | 5’6 Senior
The senior has been playing a lot of minutes for this team and has become the primary option on the offensive end. She is averaging nearly 9 points per game and has put up some impressive numbers thus far. In a game against Cornell, Rada finished with 15 points. She can get to the rim due to her speed and ability to change speed within the offense. Rada also has a smooth release to her shot and could be an impact shooter for this team as well.
Kelsey Popp | Cornell | 5’4 Sophomore
Popp has a lot of upside and is certainly a player to watch on this team. In a win over New Auburn, Popp scored 13 points for Cornell. She works well on the move and doesn’t necessarily have to be balanced to score. She is a high energy player that brings intensity to the floo, she is scrappy offensively, and she has a quick second jump to contest for rebounds. She is afraid to get into the lane with taller defenders and does very well holding a box out and chasing down boards. Popp pushes the ball in transition and finds her teammates on a dime.
