Let’s jump into the breakdown…
2022 Samiyah Briggs earned First-Team Broward County as as sophomore. The 5-foot-9 combo guard averaged 12.1 points, 4.9 rebounds and 2.8 steals last season. Moreover, Briggs shot an efficient 54 percent from the field. She looked smooth with her cross-over dribble and shooting in team drills. Briggs is averaging 11.7 points,5.0 rebounds and 2.4 steals through seven games this season. Against Highlands Christian, Briggs scored 19 points and grabbed eight rebounds on 8-of-15 from the field.
2022 Elizabeth Schnell Elizabeth Schnell 5'7" | CG Calvary Christian Academy | 2022 State FL is the Eagles leading scorer thus far this season. The 5-foot-6 combo guard is averaging 15.6 points and 2.3 rebounds through seven contests. Moreover, she has three 20+ point games already under her belt. Schnell displayed a good shot, especially from the outside during practice. However, I would like her to continue to work on her efficiency. Against Highlands Christian, Schnell scored 24 points and knocked down four 3-pointers. Her and Briggs are a good offensive combination. Ryan Petschulat is the only other junior on the team.
2023 Azana Mack is the lone sophomore on the team. By class, Mack could be considered a veteran in this group. The 5-foot-3 guard appeared effective driving into the lane. Mack will have to use her quickness and speed off the dribble to make plays.
2025 Markeli Jones-Tynes is part of the Eagles young nucleus. The 5-foot-9 point guard has averaged 8.3 points, 5.3 rebounds, 2.9 steals and 2.4 steals per game as a freshman. Her rebounding mark currently leads the team. Jones-Tynes looked good with her ball-handling and playmaking ability throughout practice. I also thought she showed off a pretty good jump shot. The fact she is an eight-grader playing point guard at a high level is impressive. Jones-Tynes already has two games with eight or more rebounds. Players that contribute outside of their natural position is always a positive to me. Jones-Tynes has a high basketball IQ and should be playing with a ton of confidence. The scorekeeper at Calvary should be busy with all the numbers she is putting in the box score.
2024 Jocelyn Gagnon is another young player for Calvary Christian. The 5-foot-11 combo guard is averaging 7.1 points and 2.9 steals per game. Her length as a freshman should give her an advantage over other players at her position. Look for her to continue to improve at both ends.
2025 Nahiah Clarke has been one of the team’s best rebounders. The 5-foot-8 guard has totaled 32 rebounds (4.6 RPG) through seven games. Moreover, Clarke has grabbed 15 boards on the offensive end. If you are noticing a trend of young backcourt players for Calvary Christian, you would be correct.
2025 Brianna Bay is another guard for Calvary Christian. The 5-foot-3 Bay has hit multiple 3-pointers in two games against Highlands Christian. She should be a contributor on the floor and see valuable minutes. 2025’s Teagan Wakefield and Brianna Brown could also see playing time. The advantage for them is they already have an indication of what it takes to play on the varsity level.
Overall Breakdown:
The Eagles might be one of the youngest teams I have seen to date. The growing pains they might face early on will only benefit them down the road. Briggs is a nice all-around player who will again find her way onto an all-county list as a junior. I think having a young team around her will only incentivize her intangibles (leadership, communication). Jones-Tynes is already playing like a veteran in my mind. I am interested to see how she develops her game. She has a long way to go and plenty of time to do so.
