The Lady Lightning are coming of a 14-12 season that included a championship victory in the 7A-14 district tournament. Dr. Krop is looking to replace two key seniors (Brianna Knowles/Kamryn Walker) that combined to average nearly 18 points per game. The team is coached by Ray Thompson and Carl Garvin.
Let’s get into the breakdown…
2021 Lindsey Weingard Lindsey Weingard 5'6" | PG Dr Krop | 2021 State FL returns to Dr. Krop as the teams leading scorer from last season. The 5-foot-6 combo guard averaged 18.5 points, 4.3 assists, 3.5 rebounds and 2.8 steals per game as a junior. Moreover, Weingard scored 20 or more points in nine games. The all-around senior also amassed 81 assists and 66 steals for Dr. Krop. The Lightning captain showcased a strong handle during practice and a ability to shoot from outside. Moreover, She ran through drills and made strong passes as the leader of the team. Weingard is a member of the Miami Suns.
2021 Lauryn Hornstein Lauryn Hornstein 5'6" | CG Dr Krop | 2021 State FL joins Weingard to lead an impressive backcourt for Dr. Krop. The 5-foot-6 shooting guard averaged 12.9 points and 2.0 rebounds as a junior. Against Cypress Bay, Hornstein tripled her scoring average by pouring in 40 points on 15-of-22 from the field. In addition, Hornstein knocked down eight 3-pointers. Her capable scoring ability from deep coincides with her talent to attack the basket. In addition, Hornstein has a good cross-over to keep defenders honest.
The X-Factor for Dr. Krop might be 2021 Emmy Mills. The 6-foot center needs to be efficient around the rim for the Lightning to be successful. As a junior, Mills averaged 7.6 points and 9.6 rebounds per game. Against Miami–Central, Mills grabbed sixteen boards (seven offensive). Mills also grabbed ten or more boards in five other games. I am sure she will trade some of those totals for initial buckets at the rim this season. The Lightning are a little thin in the frontcourt so her play will go along way in determining their season.
2024 Jaila Thompson is a player to keep an eye on for the Lightning. Thompson looked good running through drills (3-man weave) while finishing at the rim. The 5-foot-4 guard also hit some shots playing in a loose game before practice. Thompson should embrace the test of the high school season coming up in short time. She might go through some growing pains, but she looks poised to be a player in the future for Dr. Krop.
2022 Neyida Michel is another guard/forward that could provide big minutes for Dr. Krop. I think her ability to rebound and create extra possessions for the offense will be critical. This should set up Weingard or Hornstein for extra shot opportunities. As I said above, the Lightning are thin in the frontcourt. Michel could be a big help on the glass and grabbing loose balls. The “little things” make huge differences in close contests. Michel could be that player where her play goes beyond just stats. 2022 Alionna Chappell is another player that should embrace this type of role.
Overall Breakdown: Dr. Krop was a little light at practice with a couple of players still in soccer season for the school. It will be interesting to see how these players gel once they get back onto the court. For now, Emmy Mills will be a huge key to the teams success. Her scoring average could be in single digits or double digits depending on her play around the rim. This bump should lead to Dr. Krop winning a higher percentage of games. Her cardio also needs to grow as Covid-19 protocols have stunted her ability to practice. I think Weingard and Hornstein will be reliable scorers like they were last season. The question for me is the depth behind them. I am interested to see it progress over the course of the year.
