Monday we released our December rankings update for the Class of 2023. Since it coincides with the midpoint of the 2020-2021 high school season, I felt like it was a great opportunity to highlight five young ladies who have either played well following our September update, or who have gotten off to nice starts to their Sophomore seasons. Below are five guards who are quickly gaining the respect of their teammates and opponents as the season turns toward the home stretch.

Maci grew up in the Winchester community watching her older sister compete for a couple of state championships. Maci even played a solid Varsity role for the Golden Falcons as a rookie last season. But following a family move, she wound up at Blue River Valley, and she has helped the Vikings to a 12-1 start this year. When I had the opportunity to see her over the Summer, she was strong and physical for a guard, but she had good instincts, she passed it and shot it well, plus she played with a nice motor. So far this Winter, she has averaged 17.6 points, 2.2 rebounds, 4.0 assists, and 3.2 steals per game, plus she’s shooting a stellar 48% (42-88) from behind the arc.

Asia is one of the better talents in Indiana’s 2023 class who few people outside of Northwest Indiana know much about. She is a tremendous athlete with length, wiry strength, and good speed/quickness. She has ball skill and can occasionally run offense, plus she’s a playmaker in transition, but this kid is programmed to score. She is great attacking the basket downhill, plus she can change directions and finish in a lot of different ways. While she’ll need to make her perimeter jumper much more consistent, she is a shot-maker who can make big shots in tough games. After averaging 12.6 points as a Freshman, she is at 18.6 points, 7.4 rebounds, and 3.2 steals per game this year.

Shelbyville hasn’t had much prowess in girls’ basketball since the early 2000s, but Kylee is a real weapon on the floor that gives them hope each time out. As a Freshman, Kylee was dynamic, as she led the Golden Bears in scoring, rebounding, assists, and steals. This season she is leading them again in three of the four categories, plus she has managed to increase her scoring by more than five points per game. She is a nice athlete in all directions, she has wiry strength, and she plays with a tremendous motor. She is a talented multisport kid for Shelbyville, but she’s also their heart on the hardwood, averaging 20.7 points, 5.6 rebounds, 2.3 assists, and 3.5 steals per game.

I have always thought of Taylor as a well-rounded basketball player, ever since seeing her in the Summer of 2019. She is strong, willing to be physical, she is a nice downhill attacker, she shows a little touch outside, plus she’s a nice rebounder as a guard. I’ve also enjoyed her toughness and work ethic defensively as well. As a Freshman, Taylor was more of a rotation kid who played solid Varsity minutes off the bench, but this season she has really stepped up and is the Chargers second-leading scorer and rebounder. She’ll be even more dangerous as she continues to become more dynamic with the ball. Taylor is averaging 10.1 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 2.2 steals per game.

I first heard about Laney during the middle of the 2019-2020 season, as she was a solid contributor in a veteran backcourt at Charlestown. When I saw her early this Summer, she looked like she was adjusting to the speed and size of the grassroots game, but by the Fall she was outstanding at a couple of different events I attended, handling the ball much better, with patience and poise, scoring it consistently at all three levels, plus she has a pretty jump-shot. Laney is a really nice athlete with length, a wiry strong frame, and she has a solid feel for the game. I think as she tightens her handle just a little and continues getting stronger, she could be a really nice combo guard at the collegiate level.
