In 2020, where the unexpected is expected, practices have gone virtual and teams haven’t had the opportunity to meet in person, creating unique circumstances surrounding the year.
Prep Girls Hoops has been profiling some of the best talent across the Garden State and that continues in this article as PGH looks at the top forwards in the Colonial Conference’s Liberty Division.
Tatiana Johnson, Sterling: Johnson is going to have a big impact in her senior season with Sterling. The Silver Knights are without its two best scorers from last season, Latanya Berry and Marlee Syer, so Johnson, as one of two returning starting seniors, has big shoes to fill as a larger veteran presence. She averaged 6.8 PPG last season, a number that’s going to exponentially increase in 2021 as Johnson looks to fill the scoring voids left by Berry and Syer. Johnson has senior star written all over her come January.
Taylor Hinson, Collingswood: Hinson was Collingswood’s leading scorer last season and she is the returning leader on the floor this season. She found ways to get to the basket, create space for herself, and go up strong to the basket. She has a knack for getting to the foul line, leading the Panthers in made free throws in 2019/20. Averaging just over 10.0 PPG, Hinson was the only player on Collingswood to average double-digit points last season and this season, it’s onward and upward. Hinson’s ceiling is high, so watch out for a stellar 2021.
Madison Clark, Haddon Heights: Clark had quite the freshman statement for the Garnets last season, averaging 11.0 PPG with nearly 100 made free throws on the season. She made her living on the inside, in the paint, dominating on the glass on both sides of the ball. She is already arguably the team leader, a young core breaking out all at the same time. Clark will have a bigger spotlight on her and will be drawing double teams from defenses across the Colonial Conference, which frees her up to pass it to an open teammate. One’s success allows for the mutual success of the team, so Clark and Haddon Heights are going to thrive in 2021.
Maddie Eife, Collingswood: Eife had a strong 2019/20 season and going into her junior season for Collingswood, she’s going to be tasked to hold down the middle more. Eife and Hinson are a great forward duo for the Panthers and in the frontcourt, are one of the best pairings in the conference. Averaging just under 5.4 PPG in her sophomore season, Eife is going to be crashing the boards more, creating more havoc on defense from turnovers and blocks and pushing the tempo in the paint on offense.
Zaniyah Carr, West Deptford: Carr led the Eagles in made two-pointers last season and nearly had a double-digit scoring average, finishing 2019/20 with just under 10.0 PPG. She’s part of a strong senior class for West Deptford this season, a five-woman class that includes three of the team’s best scorers, Carr being one of them. She’s already fit well as the Eagles’ starting center or at least one of its most prominent front-court players. That’s going to continue in 2021, where Carr should be putting up potential double-double averages.
