With the start of the season being pushed back to January, teams have just a bit more time to get prepared for trying to run the gauntlet this season, which will be a very tough task.
Prep Girls Hoops has been taking a look at some of the best talent across the state leading up to and through this season, which continues here as PGH examines the top guards in the Colonial Conference’s Liberty Division.
Erica McDonnell, West Deptford: McDonnell, a senior, is in a really good position with West Deptford to put up some big numbers this season. Her 42 made threes in 2019-20 was near the top of the leaderboard in the division and 43 percent of her scoring last season came from beyond the arc. She is one of the best pure shooters in the conference and she also has a knack for getting to the line, leading the team in made free throws by nearly a 3:1 ratio. McDonnell, who averaged 11.7 PPG last season, will be adding a few more points to her average this season with ease for the Eagles.
Keegan Douglas, Haddonfield: Douglas is arguably the best player in the conference, and is committed to playing at Loyola Maryland next season. Now going into her senior year, she’s coming off a season where she averaged just over 20.1 PPG, around 1.7 made threes a game and was pretty close to automatic from the free throw line, making nearly 5.4 a game. She was the reason why Haddonfield went 24-4 last season and they are looking to improve upon that record this season with Douglas at the helm.
Nia Holloway, Sterling: Holloway has a lot of growth ahead of her coming into her senior season for Sterling, and she’s going to be taking over that role as a senior leader on this team. Having lost two seniors coming into the 2021 season, Holloway is part of a three-woman graduating class on the team, and she’s the returning leading scorer. She’s going to be relied upon greatly, especially beyond the arc, where she will need to average probably close to two or three made threes a game.
Maggie Campbell, Haddon Heights: Campbell, now going into her junior season at Haddon Heights, is their main outside option by far with the graduation of Shapria Kelly. Campbell’s 31 made threes last season led the team and it accounted for over 50.6 percent of her scoring last season. She’s going to be someone who will be putting up double-digit scoring averages come January and Campbell has the potential to really stake her claim as the best player on this Haddon Heights roster.
Aysiah Maldonado, Audubon: Maldonado was Audubon’s top scorer last season, a sharp-shooter from beyond the arc and a great option when driving to the basket or taking mid-range jumpers. She showed a lot of well-rounded potential in 2019-20 as someone who can just do it all on the court. The most overlooked part of her game is her defense, which now in her junior season, that’s been the focus of her game, and she’s going to keep developing into a multi-faceted guard that will control the game through herself.
