Teams and players are gearing up for what is going to be one of the most high-octane, most exciting seasons in recent memory, and easily the most unique.
Prep Girls Hoops has been following the preseason hype for this season and has been continuing to profile the best talent in the state. That continues in this article as PGH looks at the top guards in the Patriot Division of South Jersey’s Colonial Conference.
Keisha Pierce, Woodbury: Pierce is going to be an exciting watch this season, her senior season, for Woodbury. The outside will be wide open for her, though she is coming in as its best perimeter shooter with the graduation of Nyasia Clark and Aniyah Nichols. While that means more attention will be placed on guarding Pierce on the wing, she’s going to be relied upon heavily and will be a breakout star in her final high school campaign.
Kayleigh Armstrong, Haddon Township: Armstrong, a junior, was as good as it gets last season for Haddon Township, averaging around two made threes a game and 13.8 PPG. She’s one of two great sharp-shooters on the Hawks in 2021 along with sophomore Sara Weidman, who made 33 threes last season. The two combined to average 3.3 made triples a game, but Armstrong is someone who will be taking over this conference this season. Expect 16-17.0 PPG averages from her come January.
Aaliyah Parker, Lindenwold: Parker is blooming at just the right time for Lindwnwold and now, in her sophomore season, is already one of the Lions’ best players going into 2021. She led the team in made threes and was their best outside shooter, while being the second-leading overall scorer on the team. Parker gets to the lane and finishes with strength and flair. Expect plenty more of that this season as more playing time will only benefit Parker as she grows into that crucial playmaker for Lindenwold.
Zoey Cooper, Paulsboro: Cooper is going to take on a much bigger role for Paulsboro this season with five seniors gone and a big freshman class now going into their sophomore campaigns. She’s one of the veteran leaders on this team going into 2021 and is one of their best returning outside shooters and overall go-to scorers. Paulsboro has quite a young team this season, and Cooper building off her 2019/20 season and having a breakout, stellar season will go a long way into helping this team gel.
Samyah Barnes, Overbrook: Barnes is a player who is going to grow into a role of a playmaker and crunch-time scorer. She averaged 5.7 PPG last season and was quietly the second-leading rebounder on the Rams, plus someone who averaged a block a game and was the team’s leading assister in 2019/20. She can really do it all on the floor for Overbrook, which is why Barnes has the ability to not only stuff the stat sheet, but become a force on the floor even more than she was last season.
