There truly has never been a season as unprecedented as this one and it’s created buzz unlike anything that has been seen before.
Prep Girls Hoops has been looking at the best talent across the state, and now, as the season inches closer, PGH will look at the top players at each position in each conference.
This article focuses on South Jersey’s Olympic Conference and the top forwards in the National Division.
Hannah Chaney, Seneca: Chaney, a senior, was Seneca’s leading scorer last season and coming into this season, she has double-double averages on her mind after averaging 9.3 PPG and 6.1 RPG in 2019/20. While their offense will be running through her in the paint, she is also dominant with the ball in her possession and creates space for easy scoring opportunities. One of the biggest improvements to her game will be an increase in her shot-blocking, which she averaged 0.5 BPG last season. She should be averaging over 1.0 BPG this season, just based on her upward trajectory.
Nile Miller, Paul VI: Miller, a junior, is going to be needed more than ever on the boards and is another potential double-double player, which will help Paul VI flourish. She finished second on the team in total rebounds last season with 179, averaging 6.6 a game along with 8.4 PPG. She was consistent and dominant in the paint, especially as a shot blocker, averaging 1.8 BPG. Are double-double averages with 2.0+ blocks per game in the cards for Miller this season? It’s more than just a possibility for sure so keep an eye out for her.
Alison Ahern, Cherry Hill West: Ahern, a senior, was Cherry Hill West’s leading scorer last season by nearly a 3-to-1 margin, averaging just under 13.0 PPG in 2019/20. She was the story for the Lions last season and will continue to be this season and despite more eyes on her and the expected double-teams on offense, she’s going to power through and dominate. Ahern thrives on drawing contact and getting the tough two or going to the line, so that plus a great rebounder and defensive presence are the catalysts for a superstar.
Annaliah Maldonado, Camden Catholic: Maldonado, a senior, scored 12.3 PPG last season for Camden Catholic, a number expected to increase this season. She also averaged over a steal and assist per game with 0.3 BPG and just under 8.0 RPG in 2019-20. She has all the tools of an impact playmaker on the court and someone who commands the spotlight in the key moments of the game. Maldonado could put up 15-10 stat lines this season and don’t be surprised if she does.
Miracle Rivers, Camden: Rivers was one of a few bright spots on a 5-18 Camden team that really struggled during the 2019-20 season. The senior, coming into this season, was building off of last season where she averaged 8.7 PPG. She will be expected to carry much more of the load on offense and continue to be a defensive stalwart on the other side of the floor. It’s going to be an interesting season for Camden, one full of questions, any questions about Rivers will already be answered. She’s going to be the veteran leader on this team and should put up anywhere between 10-to-13 PPG this season.
