It seems like forever since the 2019/20 season came to an end, but basketball is returning across the state and teams have been gearing up for this since March.
Prep Girls Hoops is ramping up its coverage as the 2021 season starts, looking at some of the best talent across the state, including this article about the top guards in the National Division of South Jersey’s Olympic Conference.
Hannah Hidalgo Hannah Hidalgo 5'7" | PG Paul VI | 2023 State NJ , Paul VI: Talk about a first-year statement, Hidalgo, as a freshman, averaged 17.2 PPG, 3.7 APG and an insane 5.2 steals per game for a 24-3 Paul VI team in 2019/20. Just to put that steals average in perspective, that’s higher than the current NBA and WNBA records by well over 1.5 steals and just below the two highest SPG leaders ever in the history of women’s college basketball. Hidalgo is the player to watch across the region this season and is one of the 10 best players in the state in 2021.
Katie Kempter, Bishop Eustace: Kempter, now going into her senior season, paced Bishop Eustace with 42 made three-pointers last season, making an average of 1.82 threes a game. With Madison Grubb graduated, the floor opens up for Kempter, who is now the Crusaders’ go-to outside shooter, a fantastic shooter at that. She is someone who could possibly double her threes output this season or will at least flirt with somewhere between 60-80 made threes in 2021. Kempter is bound to be one of the best outside shooters in the conference.
Dillan Sorino, Camden Catholic: Sorino made her presence felt immediately in her freshman season with Camden Catholic, averaging 1.7 assists and steals per game as well as 5.1 PPG. She made just under one three a game and a great opportunity is right in front of her as Abby Polini graduated in the spring. That’s 57 threes gone for 2021, which means she is going to be relied upon heavily to fill that void. Sorino’s going to shine for Camden Catholic come January and she could emerge as its new superstar once the season ends.
Jorja Cooper, Seneca: Cooper was far and away Seneca’s best shooter last season, averaging 1.4 made threes a game. She’s the second-highest returning scorer going into 2021, one of two big seniors that Seneca will have along with forward Hannah Chaney. The majority of Cooper’s scoring, 57 percent, came from beyond the arc, but she is a balanced scorer and doesn’t just rely on the three in order to be successful. She can score from anywhere on the floor and this season, Cooper will only continue to build off of that.
Kayla Thompson, Cherry Hill West: Thompson is part of a four-woman senior class for Cherry Hill West who last season were the backbone of this team, one that hovered around .500 and finished 15-11. She’s the only pure scorer and outside shooter of the bunch, with 70 percent of her scoring coming from the perimeter. She’s an excellent spot-up shooter and transition scorer, but in order for Cherry Hill West to build off of last year’s success, Thompson will need to be that and some.
