Continue ReadingThe countdown is officially on, not just for the end of 2020, but for the start of the 2021 New Jersey high school girls basketball season.
The anticipation has been building since the 2019-20 season was halted in March and now, over 9 months later, basketball is nearly back on courts across the Garden State.
Prep Girls Hoops is on top of the excitement and hype for 2021, looking for the best talent across the state. That continues in this article as PGH profiles the top guards in the Shore Conference, specifically the A Central region.
Ally Carman Ally Carman 6'5" | C Red Bank Catholic | 2022 State NJ , Red Bank Catholic: Carman was one of the most dominant players for RBC last season and was their star in the front court, averaging 13.8 PPG and nearly scoring more than 3x as many two-point shots as her next-closest teammate. She is the backbone of this team and going into her senior season, she still has two years of growth left in her high school career. The 2021 season is going to be one of dominance for Carman on RBC and she’s going to be putting up close to double-double numbers come January.
Maureen Stapleton, St. Rose: Stapleton is going to get her chance to shine for St. Rose in 2021 as a four-woman senior class that carried the team in 2019-20 graduated last spring. That includes Maria Tedesco, St. Rose’s main forward. Stapleton is now in that role, and after averaging just under 4.0 PPG and 5.1 RPG, she’s going to blossom. She, now in her senior season herself, is also going to build off a season where she averaged over 1.0 made threes a game and 0.8 BPG, so she’s going to be an unstoppable combination of defense and shooting.
Dorothy Loffredo, Manasquan: Loffredo is part of a strong junior class Manasquan has coming through its program right now. The juniors are the undeniable leaders of this team and Loffredo is one of their best front-court options. She averaged 7.6 PPG and 5.4 RPG in during the 2019-20 season and that sets her up for this season to be a double-double machine and make her claim as the best player on Manasquan, but she has two years to reach her ceiling, which is high.
Abbey Ferguson, Holmdel: Ferguson returns to Holmdel this season as its top rebounder and second-highest scorer. She averaged 8.6 PPG, 7.2 RPG, 1.4 BPG and 1.6 SPG during the 2019-20 season and should be one of two players to average in the double figures this season and realistically the only one to put up double figure averages in rebounds. She is someone to keep on the double-double watch list this season and now, as a junior, she’s trying to make a statement. That statement is Ferguson becoming one of the premier shot-blockers in the state and one of the most fearsome forwards anywhere and 2021 is looking like that type of season.
Sarah O’Leary, Raritan: O’Leary is an underrated talent on a team that hasn’t been getting a lot of press in Raritan, which finished the 2019-20 season with a 10-15 record. She averaged just under 4.0 PPG and around 3.7 RPG, but also led the team in blocks, averaging 0.8 a game and was one of the best outside shooters on the team. O’Leary is one of two seniors on this season’s Raritan team, along with Lucy Alberici. Don’t let those stats fool you because she’s going to emerge as a fantastic shot-blocker, efficient perimeter shooter, and a great balance of scoring and rebounding in 2021.
