Yes, the state has delayed the start of the 2021 high school girls basketball season until after the start of the new year, but excitement for this season is as high as it’s ever been.
Teams and players have been practicing at home and meeting virtually to prepare for this unique season and the final preparations are being made.
Prep Girls Hoops has been at the forefront of previewing the best talent across the state of New Jersey and that continues in this article, a look at the top forwards in the Tri-County Conference and more specifically, the Classic Division.
Natalia Barrera, Gloucester Catholic: Barrera, a junior, is going to be taking over a much larger role for the Rams this season as over half its offense was lost from last year’s graduating class. She averaged 5.8 PPG last season and could more than double that point total this season. She’s going to be relied upon heavily to put up double-digit averages for Gloucester Catholic and will be an under-the-radar scorer in the TCC, someone overlooked who is going to do a lot of damage in 2021.
Catriona Galvin, Pitman: Galvin has a fantastic opportunity ahead of her going into her junior season at Pitman. With Delaney Drummey, the Panthers’ primary big last season, having graduated in the spring, Galvin is now their new primary big in 2021. She was third on the team in rebounds, assists, and steals and second in blocks, averaging 0.7 blocks a game in 2019/20. Drummey averaged an insane 4.7 blocks a game last season, 86 total blocks, and Galvin is going to be needed to fill that gap and take over as the Panthers’ premiere shot blocker. Watch out as her game evolves come January.
Emilee Sayers, Salem: Sayers was the third-highest scorer last season for Salem, averaging 6.1 PPG as a sophomore. The door is wide open for her to dominate for this team as while her game is played in the paint and inside the arc, she’s going to be filling in the scoring void that Ziara Spence is leaving behind from 2019/20. Sayers has to make up a good chunk of those 397 points, so expect to see her playing more physical near the basket, welcoming contact to get to the line and putting up a lot of tough shots near the rim for a lot of scoring opportunities.
Janna Hans, Wildwood: Hans, a senior, is one of the two best returning players for Wildwood coming into 2021, and one of two returning scorers who had 300+ total points and double-digit scoring averages in 2019/20. She averaged just over a block a game, 6.4 RPG and 2.4 SPG, just a well-balanced player at all facets of her game. She can shoot the three well, draining 34 three-pointers last season. Her 10.7 PPG is going to skyrocket and honestly, double-double averages are well within reach if Hans focuses just a bit more of her energy on crashing the boards in 2021.
Gianna Ettore, Clayton: Ettore, a junior, is a name to watch out for in 2021 on a Clayton team that scored just under 550 total points last season, going 4-19. The Clippers, losing a massive, six-woman senior class last season, will need to desperately make up that scoring void in 2021. That means players like Ettore will shine and will be given a lot of the load on offense to dominate in the paint, back down defenders, and score a lot. Ettore averaged under 3.0 PPG last season, but realistically speaking, her scoring average should jump to anywhere between 8-10 points a game this season.
