The 2021 high school girls basketball season is just around the corner, being delayed until after the new year, and the anticipation is palpable across the Garden State.
Prep Girls Hoops has been profiling the best talent across the state and that continues in this article as PGH goes down to South Jersey to look at the top forwards in the Liberty Division of the Tri-County Conference.
Mahogany Collins, Deptford: Collins is in a very favorable situation at Deptford this season as there is a big hole in the Spartans’ roster with the graduation of forward Angelina Schilling last spring. Deptford lost 205 points and 174 rebounds from Schilling, which Collins will be tasked to make up over the course of this season. She averaged around 3.7 PPG and 6.6 RPG last season, a number she can greatly improve upon in 2021. Expect to see Collins putting up potential double-double numbers this season for the Spartans.
Alexis Harkins, Delsea: Harkins is on a deep Delsea roster going into 2021, but she is going to be someone well-deserving of a starting role this season. She was one of the most reliable scoring options in the paint and scored the fourth-most points for the Crusaders last season. Harkins is entering her senior season come January, so this is her last chance to make a final statement for Delsea in the TCC. She’s going to be a big presence in the middle, a high-octane, high-energy player, and don’t be surprised to see double her point total this season.
Taleah Robinson, Cumberland: Robinson is a versatile player for Cumberland, playing both as a guard and forward. She and fellow senior guard/forward Reonna Givens are both versatile on the floor, but Robinson was the go-to scorer for Cumberland last season, averaging 12.2 PPG and 6.2 RPG. She led the team in made two-pointers and free throws, a consistent scorer and a big playmaker for the Colts. Robinson should be able to bump up her rebounding average to average a double-double on the season and that will be a big thing to watch come January.
Bella Angelucci, Triton: Angelucci has a big junior season ahead of her for Triton, a team that struggled in 2019/20, going 1-23. She’s going to make this team competitive in 2021, coming off a sophomore campaign where she averaged 9.9 PPG and 6.2 RPG, 1.45 SPG and 0.5 made threes a game. She’s going to be asked to average a double-double for this team and light it up more from beyond the arc, where she’s shown the ability to shoot from distance. A big development in 2021 for Angelucci is that long-range shooting, complementing that more with her inside game to create a strong, all-around game.
Debra Beecher, Triton: Beecher played well in her freshman season at Triton and emerged as the team’s best shot-blocker, averaging just under 2.2 blocks a game in 2019/20. She averaged 3.7 PPG and 4.2 RPG as a freshman and now, going into her sophomore season, the floor has opened up more on offense for her to dominate in the paint and on defense to continue to swat passes away and crash the glass with authority. As Beecher matures, she’s going to get better, more aggressive and more dominant, and 2021 will be the next step in seeing her progression.
