Soon, as the calendar turns to January, the vacant courts across the Garden State will hopefully be home to games once again.
Prep Girls Hoops has been finding the best talent across New Jersey and that continues in this article as PGH looks at the top guards in the Tri-County Conference, focusing on the Classic Division.
Ella Van Dine, Gloucester Catholic: Van Dine is Gloucester Catholic’s best outside shooter coming into this season as their two best shooters last season, Mycala Carney Mycala Carney 5'6" | PG Gloucester Catholic | 2020 State NJ and Lynzie Eggers, graduated last spring, leaving Van Dine for the Rams in 2021. While that means the pressure and eyes will be on her on the perimeter, that allows her to create more scoring options by drawing defenders, which gets her teammates open elsewhere on the floor. Van Dine, who averaged 5.7 PPG and just over one made three a game in 2019/20, is going to be a scoring threat this season.
Imene Fathi, Wildwood: Fathi was as dominant as they come in her sophomore season for Wildwood where she averaged just over 11.0 PPG, 3.5 APG and 2.7 SPG. She also averaged around 1.3 made threes a game which is huge for a program that is returning four of its five best perimeter shooters for 2021. Fathi is also the best passer on the team and is the returning steals leader, two overlooked stats that are going to boost her game on the defensive end, leading to fast breaks for Wildwood, and on the offensive end to find open shooters.
Jenna Georgette, Pitman: Georgette had a stellar junior season for Pitman, averaging 14.6 PPG, 2.1 SPG and just under one made three a game. That was huge for the Panthers, who hovered around the .500 mark during the season, finishing two games under for 2019/20. If they wanna compete in the division and the conference, Georgette will be relied upon to dominate all aspects of the game on offense and continue to shut down teams on defense come January. She has shown that she can not only keep up, but can excel far above the competition.
Genevieve Bechard, Salem: Bechard is in a very favorable position going into 2021 as she showed a lot of superstar potential in her sophomore season, averaging 9.5 PPG in 2019/20. Bechard has a big task in front of her though as she, in a way, will be taking over Ziara Spence’s spot on the court, Salem’s leading scorer last season. Based on her progress last season and glimpses of greatness she showed, Bechard will break out more as a shooter and won’t need to almost exclusively rely on her inside game. She can expand her range out more and start shooting more from the perimeter, adding another dangerous part to her game.
Tianna Rogers, Clayton: Rogers was a bright spot last season on a Clayton team that struggled throughout the season, finishing 4-19. She averaged 4.3 PPG, just over 1.0 APG and SPG and 0.5 made three pointers a game, great benchmarks as she enters her senior season. Clayton, if they want to make any sort of statement this season, will be utilizing Rogers much more and she has double-digit scoring potential, plus someone who can knock down a few threes a game. Watch out for how they use her in 2021.
