That’s right, the 2021 New Jersey high school girls basketball season is right around the corner as 2020 comes to a close.
Prep Girls Hoops has been profiling some of the best talent in the Garden State leading up to this season and that continues in this article as PGH profiles the top guards in South Jersey’s Tri-County Conference, specifically the Liberty Division.
Brianna Stocklin, Deptford: Stocklin was one of the best three-point shooters in the conference last season and is a big returning piece for Deptford going into 2021. The Spartans, despite finishing 2019/20 with a 12-13 record, were 9-7 in conference play, and Stocklin was a big part of that success, averaging 9.7 PPG and just over two made threes a game. Having Stocklin’s shooting prowess back in 2021 is going to pay dividends for Deptford, who is looking to prove themselves as one of the premier teams in the TCC.
Zhoei Travis, Delsea: Travis was one of Delsea’s top scorers last season, averaging 6.6 PPG and is going to be a big help in 2021, her senior season, for the Crusaders, who finished 12-15 in 2019/20. She is a versatile player, someone who can play the forward position and hold down the fort in the middle, but she excels as a shooting guard, a playmaker with an effortless shot and easy touch. Travis has the ability to expand her game beyond the arc and on the defensive end, and if she can work on those more come January, watch out because she is going to be dangerous.
Hope Goodwine, Highland: Goodwine was a huge bright spot for Highland last season as in her freshman year, she was the team’s leading scorer, averaging 15.9 PPG. While the Tartans struggled in 2019/20, unable to find their footing as they went 6-19, Goodwine nearly averaged one made three a game and over a steal a game. The spotlight will be on her as Highland lost four seniors going into 2021, but there is a really strong younger class coming up and now, with Goodwine in her sophomore season, she’s going to help lead this program to bigger and better things.
Cioni Simmons, Cumberland: Simmons, going into her junior season at Cumberland, is one of their best scorers and their best perimeter shooter. She averaged 7.0 PPG, 3.3 RPG and just under 1.4 SPG in 2019/20 and has even more room to grow with two years left in high school, not to mention the fact she averaged over one made three-pointer a game. Simmons is going to grow and flourish this season and will break out as a double-digit scorer and someone who should average 2-3 made threes a game in 2021.
Gia Teti, Triton: Triton is a really interesting basketball team this season, coming off a 1-23 year in 2019/20 and Teti, now a junior, is going to fit perfectly into the mix. While averaging just 3.3 PPG last season, there is a big opening for her in the lineup as senior guard Tori Foster graduated in the spring, and her nearly 10.0 PPG is lost coming into 2021. Enter Teti, who will be handling the ball a lot more and is going to have a great opportunity to really break out and excel as a guard who can not only drive to the basket, but shoot from the outside just as well, if not better.
