I had the chance to stay local last week and see several teams from my area, either in person or on stream, which is how most schools are going in todays pandemic. Over the next few days, I will talk about some of the players that caught my eye. Today, a look at some of the seniors who played well during Week 5 of the high school season in Ohio.
<span style="font-family: ’arial black’, sans-serif;"><strong><span style="font-size: 14pt;">Saharra Murphy, 5-5 Huber Heights Wayne</span></strong></span>
On a team led by some bigtime offensive firepower, Saharra is a major factor on the defensive side of the ball, and I really liked her intensity to get after it. She had a high motor and showed her ability to play solid on-ball defense. She does a good job not allowing her opponent to get into her offense. Creates havoc on that side of the ball, while always first to the ball and her leadership helps keep their offense flowing where the scorers can lead the way on offense.
<span style="font-size: 14pt; font-family: ’arial black’, sans-serif;"><strong>[player_tooltip player_id="211754" first="Lovie" last="Malone"], 5-8 Huber Heights Wayne</strong></span>
Everyone knows about Bree Hall, you read about her last week. But [player_tooltip player_id="211754" first="Lovie" last="Malone"] is an unsung hero on this team with her solid floor leadership and aggressive style of play. Yes she can also score, but she is such a solid leader it is not hard to figure out why she is going to the next level. She makes plays happen with her uptempo style, has great court vision and has a steady perimeter shot.
<strong><span style="font-size: 14pt; font-family: ’arial black’, sans-serif;">Callie Hunt, 6-2 Trenton Edgewood</span></strong>
Everytime I see her play, I like her more. She has developed into a very solid post player with a lot more weapons than just back to the basket. Callie <em>(feature photo above) </em>can score from anywhere, and not only does she have good hands, she moves well without the basketball. She can move off of screens and score and can defend inside or out. Will be a solid next-level player.
<span style="font-size: 14pt; font-family: ’arial black’, sans-serif;"><strong>[player_tooltip player_id="32575" first="Emma" last="Hess"], 6-1 Legacy Christian</strong></span>
Smoothest player I have seen the way she moves around the court, has the ability to handle the ball and set up her offense. She can score off the pass or the dribble without hesitation, and elevates well on her shot, with a variety of moves. Great fadeaway from the midrange and can score on anyone. Loves to run the floor and score in transition. I believe she is one of the top three D4 players in Ohio, in the conversation with [player_tooltip player_id="32556" first="Ivy" last="Wolf"] and [player_tooltip player_id="32563" first="Madison" last="Royal-Davis"] as the best.
<span style="font-size: 14pt; font-family: ’arial black’, sans-serif;"><strong>[player_tooltip player_id="32589" first="Kathleen" last="Ahner"], 5-8 Legacy Christian</strong></span>
She works so well with Hess in the Legacy Christian offense, Kathleen is the epitome of a hard-nosed skilled guard. She handles the ball very well, can score from beyond the arc, can also put the ball on the floor and get to the rim. Sees the floor well and can get the ball to her teammates. I don’t know many guards who leaves it all on the floor like Kathleen does.
<strong><span style="font-size: 14pt; font-family: ’arial black’, sans-serif;">Chloe McGlinch, 5-7 Franklin Monroe</span></strong>
Part of a solid senior duo at Franklin Monroe with Stella Shellabarger who takes over a Jets team who lost nearly everyone from a great four year run. They played hard and battled Legacy Christian close at home. Chloe hit some big shots deep in the fourth period and while they were out of contention at that time, she never gave up. She has good range, can score from the 3, and showed a steady all around game. Can set up her teammates.
