“We started off slow and then tried to start pressing to try to get some energy, White Knoll coach Walt Allen said. “We just came out lackadaisical and I was afraid of that coming off of the Lexington game (a 53-52 victory on Jan. 26).”
Things began auspiciously for Chapin as they assumed a 5-0 lead early before White Knoll led after the first quarter, 15-8 then went into halftime with a 36-19 edge.
“On Tuesday, we played Airport (a 40-38 win),” Eagles coach Jacob Coltrane said. “And these girls show great resilience. We get down a little bit, but they know that we can crawl back time and time again. That’s just how we practice every day.”
Prep Girls Hoops was on hand at White Knoll to take in the proceedings. Here is a look at who stood out from Friday’s contest.
McKenzie Lott McKenzie Lott 5'4" | PG Chapin | 2021 State SC – 2021 – Chapin HS – A quintessential point guard and floor general for the Eagles. With only a few games remaining in her high school career, she is poised to conclude said career in emphatic fashion. Lott puts in a “lott” of effort in several aspects of her game – including passing, shooting 3-point shots and not giving up on loose balls which compliments her all-around hustle. If she misses a second free throw, there is a chance she will recover to grab the rebound and make an opponent pay by scoring two points instead of one. Lott scored 17 points, including three free throws in the fourth quarter.
Jasmine Jenkins Jasmine Jenkins 5'8" | SF Cane Bay | 2022 State SC – 2022 – White Knoll HS – Typically, there is that one player from every game that fans, coaches, players, media and other onlookers look at as the story from a typical contest. Jenkins may have been that story from Friday’s night’s get-together between White Knoll and Chapin. She is fearless in going after defenders, has a speed which allows her to bring the ball up the floor (either to set up the half court offense or in transition) with ease and can get creative with her shot selection. She also made four fourth quarter free throws – exactly what coaches look for in closer games. Jenkins finished with 24 points, leading all scorers.
Riley Robinson – 2021 – Chapin HS – Riley Robertson is remarkable, reliable and runs with rigor. In addition, she has skills that can tag her as a quintessential point guard. Robinson also has proven herself as an effective scorer and one of those buckets came at a key point early in the game. When the Timberwolves answered a first quarter 5-0 run with a 9-0 scoring binge of their own, Robinson drained a triple to snap the Timberwolves scoring streak. She can shoot 3s and also hit free throws as she made five of her six tries from the stripe in the fourth quarter. She finished with 11 points.
Imani Roberts – 2021 – White Knoll HS – She may wear the No. 13 for the Timberwolves, but that number is a fortunate one in the heart of Lexington County. It was Roberts who first put White Knoll on the board with a midrange jumper in the first quarter to snap the early Eagles 5-0 run. Roberts will also draw contact to find her way to the free throw line, shoot to the 3-point shot and make things happen on the defensive side as well. Roberts, fittingly, finished with 13 points and was one of two starters for White Knoll that did not commit a foul.
Trinity Curry Trinity Curry 6'6" | C Chapin | 2021 State SC – 2021 – Chapin HS – It is easy to look at the 6-foot-6 Curry and think how is every play Chapin runs on offense not focused on a high-percentage shot in the paint. Having someone with her imposing presence and ability to rebound is something that simply happens for any team. She is also a shot blocker. What sets some bigs away from the others is when they have a court awareness to get in position to anticipate passes near the rim that can be converted into easy twos. Curry displayed that ability in this game. She scored eight points, but six of those eight cam in the fourth quarter.
Karlee Phelps Karlee Phelps 6'2" | C Gray Collegiate | 2025 State SC – 2025 – White Knoll HS – The other starter for the Timberwolves that managed to finish the game without any personal fouls, Phelps will be a problem on offense and defense for opposing teams for years to come. Listed at 6-foot-2, the matchup between her and the Eagles’ Carey was arguably the most fascinating one to watch. Along with rebounding, passing and shot blocking capabilities, she is also an athletic big where she can make plays outside of the painted area. Phelps, who concluded Friday’s game with 11 points, also showed her consistency as a scorer, being one of three Timberwolves starters (Jenkins and Roberts were the others) with at least one field goal in every frame.
