The Highlanders trailed the Skyhawks by one point at the half and Hammond assumed a two point, 32-30 lead after three before Hammond outscored Heathwood Hall 17-9 in the final frame to clinch its latest victory of the season.
Prep Girls Hoops was on hand in Columbia to take in the action that took place at Fawcett Indoor Stadium at Hammond School. Here is a look at who caught our eye from Tuesday night’s contest.
Ellie Singerling (2022) – Heathwood Hall Episcopal – Her play for the Highlanders will have Heathwood Hall aficionados singing a happy tune. She possesses an ability to shoot and drain shots from anywhere on the court whether that is near the rim or from longer range. For much of the game, Heathwood Hall’s defense put up a stout effort against Hammond and Singerling was at the center of a number of defensive highlights for the Highlanders. Singerling tallied 12 points on the evening for Heathwood Hall and was the only Highlander who scored at least once in every quarter.
Tyra Myers Tyra Myers 5'6" | PG Hammond | 2022 State SC (2022) – Hammond School – The Skyhawks’ star junior is not ranked sixth on Prep Girls Hoops South Carolina’s 2022 rankings for nothing as she continues to impress game by game. Myers is a ball handler and passer who will get the Skyhawks offense organized, particularly in the half court. If she misses a shot she will not give up on a play. Defenses better be on their toes since there is a chance she will corral her own rebound and clean up her own mess. She will also shoot from long range and is not afraid of the challenge of taking on a sea of defenders. Myers was also at the center of the Skyhawks’ scoring binge in the fourth quarter and she put up 18 of her 32 points in the second half.
Brooklyn Moore (2022) – Heathwood Hall Episcopal – Brooklyn gives coach Brionna Zimmerman’s Highlanders team “Moore” in every phase of the game. An easy way a player can pass an eye test with a coach or scout is with toughness and tenacity and Moore certainly passes that test. That toughness allows her draw contact from defenders and find her way to the free throw line. She can score under the rim and her tenacity and toughness allows her to get the Highlanders out of some unusual situations when pressured by defenses. Moore finished with 11 points.
Anna Katherine Adams (2024) Hammond School – Another nucleus of the Skyhawk attack. Adams is one of the primary ball handlers for Hammond, and despite only being listed at 5-foot-5, is one who will use her agility to corral in rebounds. She will also attract contact from defenders which puts her at the line and her defense can force opponents into turnovers. Adams only had five points for the game – a far distance from when she scored 16 earlier in the season in a 59-52 victory over the holidays vs. York Prep, but as we know, the stat sheet does not tell the whole story.
Adelaide Wood (2022) Heathwood Hall Episcopal – The primary big for the Highlanders, she set a tone for Heathwood Hall by winning the opening tip. As someone who spends much of her time in the low post, that can mean either converting on high-percentage shots or tougher tries against a number of defenders to get contact and find her way to the free throw line. Wood also proves to be an effective rebounder as well as a shot blocker. She is one too who will get in position for her point guards to make plays by finding her for uncontested shots near the basket. Wood finished with four points.
Hailey Inman – Hammond School – As much as any coach loves production from her or his starters, any coach will grin from ear to ear when they get productive minutes from the bench. Inman provided those minutes, especially in the fourth quarter. The Skyhawks’ depth came in handy as she aided Hammond’s fourth quarter scoring binge with a pair of 3-pointers. She also caused problems for the Highlanders on defense as well, poking the ball away from Heathwood Hall and getting to the other end of the floor in transition. Along with two steals, Inman also scored eight points – six of which came of the two treys in the fourth quarter.
