Last night’s opening games brought a ton of excitement throughout the state but there are a few that stood out above the rest. One of those games came from the Cape-Atlantic League between two of the top teams in the conference in Ocean City and Mainland. A game that came down to the wire Mainland was able to hold off Ocean City for a narrow 39-35 win. We got to see several players start their season off strong, these are the players that stood out the most.
1st Star: Camryn Dirkes (Mainland): In her first varsity game for Mainland Camryn Dirkes showed exactly why she should be able to gain steady rotation minutes from the jump. Ending the game with 12 points Dirkes has the ability to fight inside for loose balls or wait for her moment at the three point line. She ended up with two three point shots and while it seemed like that was her first look most times she had the ball in her hands she also wasn’t afraid to put the ball on the ground and drive. A very nice all around game from Dirkes in her varsity debut.
2nd Star: Marin Panico (Ocean City): The stat line isn’t what we necessarily expected from one of Ocean City’s top options in Marin Panico but she still has her fingerprints all over this game. Ending the game with nine points, Panico struggled to get going early thanks in large part to her getting double teamed on the wings a lot by Mainland forcing her to pass out often. Even without her reliable offensive game early Panico was able to set up her teammates well, throwing passes to the spot instead of the player which allowed a lot of open looks.
3rd Star: Avery Jackson (Ocean City): In a year with so many changes Ocean City is hoping for Avery Jackson to take a step forward in her sophomore year. She got off on the right foot in the opening game, scoring a game high 13 points with three makes from three point range. Besides Marin Panico and Marlee Brestle the Red Raiders need to find another reliable offensive weapon, Jackson showed she can be that player.
