It’s past the halfway point of the season in Ohio girls basketball, and the time has come to start separating the contenders from the pretenders. That doesn’t always mean teams, but players also. Each season, the writers from around Ohio in print media select their all-Ohio teams and the prestigious Ms. Basketball award winner. While all awards are subjective, the prestige of the award is not. It is the award that everyone dreams of earning. Today a look at some of my leading candidates for the top award in Ohio. I will also look at some more candidates tomorrow including a handful of non-seniors battling for the award. [player_tooltip player_id="32554" first="Aubryanna" last="Hall"], 6-0 2021, Huber Heights Wayne Let’s face facts. She is the best player in Ohio and after getting slighted last season by only making second-team, she is on a mission to prove everyone wrong. She has led Wayne to a 12-1 start, and is putting up solid numbers at 25.5 points per game, along with just over 8 rebounds per game. She is also putting up solid defensive numbers with 3.6 steals per game and 2.8 blocks. She can play all five positions and guard anyone. Headed to South Carolina. She is my pick to capture the 2021 Ohio Ms. Basketball award. [player_tooltip player_id="32563" first="Madison" last="Royal-Davis"], 5-8 2021, Toledo Christian Averaging 27.7 points per game, Madison is the defending Ohio D4 Player of the Year. Her numbers have increased as she is also averaging 9 rebounds, 7.5 assists and 8 steals per game. She is a two-time state champion and was first-team all-Ohio the last two years. She surpassed the 2,000-point mark for her career. Headed to Butler University. [player_tooltip player_id="91062" first="Shyanne" last="Sellers"], 6-0 2021, Aurora She has enjoyed a very successful high school career in Northeast Ohio, but her best basketball in still front of her. She can play anywhere on the court and is explosive with her athleticism. The top candidate for the award from that district of Ohio. Averaging 21.1 points,13,0 rebounds, 4.5 assists, 2.7 steals nd 1.7 blocks per game. Shyanne is headed to Maryland. [player_tooltip player_id="91063" first="Makayla" last="Elmore"], 6-2 2021, Hopewell-Loudon The Clemson commit has put together quite a memorable senior season. Not only did she surpass the 2,000-point mark this year, she has dominated in NW Ohio again this season. Averaging 22.1 points, 12.6 rebounds and 3.3 assists per game. She also holds the record with 41 points in a game as a junior and is the reigning Division 3 state Player of the Year. (pictured above) [player_tooltip player_id="32556" first="Ivy" last="Wolf"], 5-9 2021, Minster Two time defending state champion, Ivy has put together quite a resume again during her senior season. She is averaging 19.0 points, 5 assists, 4 rebounds and 3.7 steals while shooting 45% from the three and 85% from the line. The Miami of Ohio signee has her team playing very well right now and while she will have a tough battle with Royal-Davis from the NW District, no question Ivy is in this elite group of candidates. [player_tooltip player_id="32567" first="Emma" last="Shumate"], 6-0 2021, Newark She is the leader of a very balanced and loaded Newark team. While the debate remains who the best D1 team in Ohio is either Newark of MND, there is no doubt to Emma’s talent. She is averaging 12.5 points, 5.4 rebounds per game, with 2 steals and shooting 40% from the field. znot the eye popping numbers of others, but definitely the talent of all of her fellow candidates. West Virginia University signee.
