It’s expected in a state like the Garden State, where some of the best talent in the country is located. Of any conferences to watch so far this season, the eyes of the state have seemed to gravitate toward the Shore Conference, especially on Jan. 29.
The two matchups of the day in the conference were a battle of rivals Manasquan & St. Rose, who played to 55-52 contest in favor of Manasquan just days previous in both’s season openers.
St. Rose took Round 2 on Friday, winning 60-53, but it was another matchup that had heads turning: Rumson-Fair Haven v Red Bank Regional.
The Bucs had control of this game with a few minutes remaining in the third quarter, when things changed and the Bulldogs took over, finishing the game on a 40-27 run to win, 71-68
Friday evening’s game revolved around the performance of Rumson-Fair Haven’s Grace Munt, a senior who missed much of the 2019-20 season. Munt, who was relatively silent in the first half, scored 25 of the Bulldogs’ 55 points in the second half, including five three-pointers.
Munt had help in the fourth quarter in the form of sophomore Julia Corsentino Julia Corsentino 5'9" | SG Rumson-Fair Haven | 2023 State NJ , who scored all of her 12 points in the game’s final quarter. Corsentino finished with 12 points, eight rebounds & five steals in the game.
On the other side, Red Bank had four players finish in double figures, including a double-double from Camryn Gardner. Amelia Medolla led the Bucs with 23 points on the night and Chloe Teter followed closely behind, finishing with 17 points in the game.
This game picked up significantly in the second half, as both teams combined to score 95 of the game’s 139 total points, with Rumson-Fair Haven out-scoring Red Bank 55-45 after being down 23-16 at halftime.
The biggest takeaway from this game? The Shore Conference is full of uncertainty this season, but the best teams will rise to the top as we saw in this competitive, see-saw affair.
Red Bank, after winning 20+ games the past two seasons, is 0-2 for the first time since 2014-15, when the Bucs finished 6-19.
Don’t expect this program to freefall that dramatically, but as we’ve seen in college basketball, some of the best programs in the country year in and year out have taken a nosedive in 2021.
With all that’s going on outside the world of basketball and the uncertainty that the state had on whether there would even be a 2021 season, there is one saying to live by for this season, the same one that’s circled the sports world over: expect the unexpected.
