Below is a list of standout performers in the sophomore class.
Sydney Ludvigsen | Union Grove | 5’9 SG
A sniper from deep, the Union Grove standout is not shy when creating her shot. She’s a green light shooter with the ability to put up huge numbers each game. She pushes the tempo offensively and can create off the dribble or the pass. She moves well with the ball and can handle as the lead guard if her team needs her. She has great positional height to be a consistent threat from the perimeter. In a 60-49 victory over Badger, the sophomore led her team in scoring with 19 points. She went 4-5 from the three point line.
Lexi White | Wausau West | 5’9 G
The guard helped lead her team to an impressive win over Mosinee on Monday, Jan 18th. A versatile guard who can score inside as well as behind the arc, White is extremely talented. She excels in transition and is extremely athletic on the floor. She’s also an impact defender as she has length and speed. She’s able to defend multiple spots on the floor and doesn’t shy away from high pressure defense. In the win against Mosinee, White finished the game with 15 points for her team.
Jaelyn Derlein Jaelyn Derlein 5'7" | CG DeForest | 2023 State WI | DeForest | 5’7 G
The sophomore was huge in her team’s win over Dodgeville. She’s already such a key player for this team that she oozes with leadership abilities on the floor. She’s a playmaker with a clear advanced IQ. She understands the flow of the game and doesn’t force anything on either end. She can score at all three levels and capitalize on the free throw line. She creates off the dribble and sees a lot of points off break away layups and steals when playing the passing lane. In a victory over Dodgeville, Derlein finished with 24 points for her team.
Megan Schuman Megan Schuman 6'0" | SF Brillion | 2023 State WI | Brillion | 5’10 F
Schuman is such an exciting player with so much upside for the future. She’s a versatile forward who can effortlessly step out and handle the ball as well. She’s been playing very impressive basketball this season and filling the stat sheet. She’s a rebounding machine who knows how to keep the ball high after an offensive board. She’s a force on defense and oftentimes an intimidation factor in the lane for other teams. Schuman is a spark plug offensively and will take off with scoring if taken lightly. In a win over Reedsville, Schuman led her team with 15 points and 6 rebounds.
Kylie Wittnebel | Beaver Dam | 6’0 F
The sophomore showed a glimpse of how effective she will be on both ends of the court in the years to come. A clear two-way athlete with an ability to put up huge numbers, Wittnebel was very impressive this week for Beaver Dam. She thrives in transition and can finish strong in the lane. In a win over Portage this week, the forward scored 12 points for her team.
Karissa Smith Karissa Smith 5'9" | SG Appleton North | 2023 State WI | Appleton North | 5’8 G
Smith helped lead her team to a huge victory over a talented Oshkosh West squad. She put up some impressive numbers and was able to score from every spot on the floor. She attacks well- she puts her head down and doesn’t let anyone stop her in the lane. Smith doesn’t shy away from contact and embraces high pressure on the perimeter. She has a smooth midrange stroke as well as a confident perimeter shot. In a win over Oshkosh West, the sophomore led her team in scoring with 17 points. She went 3-4 from the three point line as well.
Kyana Aguilera | Saint Francis | 5’6 G
The athletic playmaker finished with 20 points and 16 rebounds for her team in a win over HOPE Christian. Aguilera has the skill set to become a breakout player in the coming years. She’s improved greatly in so many areas this season and has really become quite a two-way athlete. She works extremely hard on defense and is seeing a lot more deflections this year. She has the footwork to be able to guard consistently at a high level.
Sammie Buss Sammie Buss 5'5" | PG Neenah | 2023 State WI | Xavier | 5’6 PG
The point guard helped lead her team to a big win over New London. Buss finished the game with 17 points. She works extremely well with her bigs inside the lane and has been so elite in finding them open in transition as well as with a perfect drive and dish. She is a fantastic on-ball defender and shifter on the perimeter. She makes a lot of plays that do not show up on the box score as well- necessary for success at any level. She seems to be a great teammate who is constantly looking to find her teammates open before herself.
Zoe Behrendt | Whitefish Bay | 5’9 W
The Whitefish Bay standout led her team in scoring with 13 points in a victory over Nicolet. She also added 9 rebounds. She is a highly athletic win with tremendous upside. She has long arms and plus athletic ability to make her a phenomenal scorer from the perimeter. She’s able to move without the ball and is quick enough to beat her opponent to the spot to set up her shot. She’s been improving on the defensive end as well as she seems to be getting quicker and more confident playing hard on both ends. Her coordination is rapidly improving as well; her handle and comfort with the ball are noticeable better from just a year ago.
Meghan Schultz Meghan Schultz 6'4" | C New Berlin West | 2023 State WI | New Berlin West | 6’3 F
Schultz is a true post player that is simply just a nightmare on the block. She does very well scoring the ball with her back to the basket at this level. She shows great strength when holding the ball and is not afraid to put it on the ground. She is a mobile post player that will step outside on the perimeter and can still be effective in a five out set. The sophomore is able to move better than one would think for her size in transition; she does well getting to the spot and sealing for the open pass from her guards. Schultz finished with a game high 24 points in a victory over Greendale. She also grabbed 9 boards in the win.
Sammi Beyer Sammi Beyer 5'7" | CG Appleton East | 2023 State WI | Appleton West | 5’7 G
Beyer is such an impressive point guard with playmaking ability for the next level. She plays with swag and confidence that is simply intimidating on the floor. She moves with patience and poise- rarely forcing anything offensively. She sets her feet nice for the shot and has a smooth release on the perimeter. Beyer continues to show glimpses of elite court vision as she works to find her teammates open within the offense. In a huge win over Fond Du Lac, the sophomore finished the game with 15 points, 4 assists and 4 steals.
