It’s a really exciting time for high school girls basketball in New Jersey, a feeling that hasn’t existed since the 2019-20 season ended last March.
Prep Girls Hoops is here to cover all the excitement leading up to this 2021 season and throughout the season, including in this article as PGH takes a closer look at the top guards in the Cape-Atlantic League, specifically the American Division.
Sanai Garrison-Macon, Atlantic City: Garrison-Macon is one of three impact players returning this season for Atlantic City, who lost two key seniors from the 2019-20 season. However, Garrison-Macon, a junior, returns as the team’s leading scorer, perimeter shooter and passer. She averaged 9.6 PPG, 4.3 RPG, 3.2 APG and just under 2.0 SPG for the Vikings last season. The sky’s the limit for Garrison-Macon in 2021, so while not only being a veteran team leader, she’s going to put up double-digit scoring averages for Atlantic City this season. Don’t be surprised if she averages anywhere from 6-8 rebounds and assists per game as well.
Egypt Owens, Vineland: Owens had a fantastic freshman season to begin her high school career Vineland, averaging 12.7 PPG, 5.4 RPG, 3.2 APG and 2.5 SPG for the Fighting Clan. She is one of two sophomores that will be playing a big role for a program that went 7-17 during the 2019-20 season, her and Samantha Jones. Owens is arguably already Vineland’s backbone and team leader after the poise and success she showed on the floor as a freshman. She’s only going to grow and improve, so don’t be surprised if she puts up double-double statistics as a guard in 2021.
Tatyana Chandler, Bridgeton: Chandler is part of a strong guard tandem that propelled Bridgeton to a 15-11 record during the 2019-20 season. Chandler, now a senior, averaged 11.5 PPG, 4.1 RPG, 2.5 APG, 3.3 SPG and 1.3 made threes a game last season. She returns as Bridgeton’s best perimeter shooter and the second-best scorer and defender and is going to be looking to leave the Bulldogs’ program with a lasting legacy. This season will determine that legacy and she should live up to those expectations. Expect her to average around 14.0 PPG, over two made threes a game and possibly four steals a game in this shortened 2021 season.
Nijah Tanksley, Bridgeton: Tanksley is the other half of Bridgeton’s 2021 guard tandem and she’s as well-rounded and dangerous as they come. She’s a top player to watch in the Cape-Atlantic League this season, coming off a sophomore year where she averaged 15.1 PPG, 3.6 RPG, 0.5 BPG, 0.7 made threes a game and just under 4.3 SPG. She’s a dominant force for the Bulldogs, an explosive scorer on offense and a shut-down defender. Don’t be surprised if Tanksley averages 20.0 PPG, 1.0+ BPG and made threes a game, and 5.0+ SPG this season.
Lauren Baxter, Egg Harbor: Baxter is in a very interesting situation at Egg Harbor, but is arguably the best player in a large senior class for the Eagles in 2021. She made her living inside the arc, but was also EHTHS’s best passer and defender, averaging 9.2 PPG, 2.9 APG and 3.8 SPG during the 2019-20 season. With two impact seniors graduating last spring, Baxter will be relied upon more as a guard to create more scoring through passing and fast break opportunities off steals and expect her to average double-digits in the scoring column in 2021.
