Giavanna Barras – Senior: Somerset Tech
Barras had an impressive season opener in a 47-36 win for Somerset Tech over Piscataway Tech, putting up a 16-point, 13-rebound double-double. She’s picking up where she left off in the 2019-20 season, one where she battled for playing time with seniors Liliana Gomez & Ritu Peddniti, who both graduated in the spring. With Gomez and Peddinti gone, space has opened up for Barras to dominate and she’ll be playing a lot this season as Somerset Tech is fielding a thin roster in 2021.
Maya Fenyk – Junior: Woodbridge Academy
Fenyk is coming off a sophomore season where she averaged 10.56 RPG & 4.04 BPG for Woodbridge Academy, both impressive numbers. She solidified herself as a force in the conference in the season opener earlier in the week where she filled out the stat sheet, recording a double-double with 11 points, 13 rebounds, two blocks and two steals. Fenyk is Woodbridge Academy’s main forward option, which means she will not only get her rebounds, but she’ll have much more scoring opportunities in 2021.
Reagan Fogarty – Sophomore: Calvary Christian
Fogarty had a standout freshman season for Calvary Christian, averaging 11.56 PPG, 5.16 RPG, 2.4 BPG and just under one made three-pointer a game. She and senior Rebecca Raike are going to be manning the middle and forming a forward tandem that is among the best in the state. Expectations are high for Fogarty in 2021 after what she was able to do to begin her high school career and rightfully so. She is a shot-blocking machine and can shoot from just about anywhere on the court on offense, a perfect combination for a forward with range.
Crystal Genthe – Senior: East Brunswick Tech
Genthe carried East Brunswick Tech on her back in its season-opening 37-20 loss to Perth Amboy Tech, scoring 16 of those points along with 11 rebounds, two blocks and four steals. The team ran through her in all facets of the game, which for someone who played just nine games with varsity last season, shows how much progress she’s made this offseason. Genthe is already a bright spot for a team that is looking to build off a disappointing 2-19 season in 2019-20.
Jamiyah Alston – Junior: Piscataway Tech
Alston was very impressive in Piscataway Tech’s season-opening 47-36 loss to Somerset Tech, putting up a 13-point, 11-rebound double-double with five assists, five blocks and four blocks. She’s coming off a sophomore season where she averaged a double-double along with 5.0 BPG, so this performance is now very much expected from the junior. She’s an aggressive player who dominates on the glass, creates space in the paint and doesn’t allow any opponent to get comfortable if they drive into the lane. Expect a big season out of Alston in 2021.
