Games will be starting up in the next few days as teams are beginning to scrimmage for the first time. The circumstances surrounding the season might be unique, but the basketball will be as competitive as it’s ever been.
Prep Girls Hoops has been taking a close look throughout the state for the best talent and that continues in this article as PGH profiles the top guards in the Greater Middlesex Conference, specifically the Blue division.
Brianna Montajes, Middlesex: Montajes is the unquestionable leader of this Middlesex team going into her senior season. As a junior, she averaged 13.6 PPG, 4.7 RPG, 1.9 SPG and 0.8 made threes a game. She returns as the team’s leading scorer, third-best rebounder and one of its top outside shooters. She will be relied upon in that department more this season, but as the veteran leader of a stellar guard trio for Middlesex, Montajes already has a strong level of maturity and that, combined with a great ability to score, is going to have a dominant senior season in 2021.
Chloe Cassidy, Dunellen: Cassidy was a scoring machine for Dunellen in the 2019-20 season and that’s going to come back in a big way in 2021. She averaged 14.8 PPG, 4.4 RPG, 2.5 APG, 2.7 SPG and 1.6 made threes a game, leading the team in scoring, three-point shooting, passing and steals, tied with guard Erin Barnett, who graduated last spring. Cassidy is Dunellen’s go-to guard and shared that role last season with Barnett, but now, Cassidy is going to be in the spotlight the entire season. She’s going to live up to those expectations, so expect a big senior season out of her in 2021.
Molly Malague, Metuchen: Malague did it all last season for Metuchen, filling up the stat sheet, and she is going to be the key piece returning for what should be one of the most competitive teams in the division. She averaged 16.2 PPG, 9.4 RPG, 2.2 SPG, 0.8 BPG and 1.2 made threes a game. What really shined the most for her is her defensive presence as someone who can noy only step up for a block, but also play scrappy and look for an opportunity for a steal and a fast break going the other way. Malague is going to be a big key to Metuchen’s success in 2021, so watch out.
Jeniya Mitchell, Highland Park: Mitchell impressed in her freshman season at Highland Park for a program that had a tough year, finishing 4-17 in 2019-20. She averaged 8.2 PPG and 1.0 SPG while showing promise shooting from the perimeter and being a crucial presence down low. She was the team’s best three-point shooter and was the third-leading scorer last season. Mitchell returns as one of the lone guard options and will be leading the point for the Owls, so expect to see her really work on her defense and expanding her range as a shooter because her ceiling is only rising.
Giana Oelkers, Spotswood: Oelkers has a fantastic opportunity ahead of her with Spotswood this season and is coming up with a junior class that is the backbone of this team. She had a strong 2019-20 season, averaging 3.3 PPG, 3.1 RPG, 1.6 APG and 1.8 SPG and with senior guards Jessica Addesso and Maddie Hellerich having graduated last spring, the door is wide open. Oelkers has the opportunity to run the point for the next two seasons and develop into an excellent scorer and passer, and the 2021 season will be the beginning of that.
