The excitement has been building month by month and week by week since the beginning of the new year and Prep Girls Hoops has been at the center of covering this excitement.
PGH continues to look for the best talent across the state, including this article profiling the top guards in the White Division of the Greater Middlesex Conference.
Akyia Baker, St. Thomas Aquinas: Baker comes into her senior season as St. Thomas Aquinas’ top scorer, passer and steals leader. She averaged 9.0 PPG, and 0.8 APG, SPG and made threes a game during the 2019-20 season, one of two returning players who scored over 100 total points and the only one to score over 200. Baker is now the go-to scorer on this team, the backbone of St. Thomas Aquinas, and she’ll need to show her veteran presence from the jump in 2021.
Alexandria Tucker, New Brunswick: Tucker has been overlooked as one of the top emerging outside shooters in the conference due to New Brunswick’s 3-23 season in 2019-20. However, she’s a budding star in the making, averaging 8.2 PPG, 1.1 SPG and 0.7 made threes a game last season. Tucker should put up double-digit scoring averages and well over two made threes a game in 2021 and the floor will open up for her as the season matures.
Niyell McCargo, North Brunswick: McCargo had quite the first impression for North Brunswick in her freshman season in 2019-20 and is a top guard to watch in the entire conference in 2021. She averaged 17.2 PPG, 6.3 RPG, 2.5 APG, 3.5 SPG and 0.8 made threes a game. Her scoring ability and staunch defense immediately stands out, especially through steals. McCargo could put up double-double numbers as a sophomore guard this season and don’t be surprised if she does.
Mattison Chiera Mattison Chiera 5'10" | CG Colonia | 2023 State NJ , Colonia: Chiera is the complete package, an all-around dominant player who can not only score at will from anywhere on the court, but isn’t afraid to play up on defense and be physical on the court. She averaged 14.1 PPG, 6.2 RPG, 1.3 made threes a game and just under 2.0 SPG during the 2019-20 season. Chiera in 2021 is going to be a force to be reckoned with and she should flirt with a double-double average as well as well over two made threes a game and close to 3.0 SPG.
Stephanie Van Note, Sayreville: Van Note is going to be a senior to watch out for across the entire state in 2021 after posting fantastic junior numbers for Sayreville. She averaged just under 17.0 PPG, 6.0 RPG, 4.4 APG and 3.5 SPG for the Bombers last season and was a big reason why the program went 17-10. This season, expect the same and more from Van Note, who should average close to or over 20.0 PPG and watch out for her passing because she has the potential to increase her average assists to around 5.5 per game.
