Last year saw some great teams and players in Mercer County. It was Trenton Catholic, as the top seed, that took home the Mercer County Tournament after defeating second-seeded Stuart Day, 60-43. There were some upperclassmen that made an impact last season and also some of the county’s younger players. Let’s take a look at some of the top players in Mercer County going into the 2021 season.
<strong>[player_tooltip player_id="134644" first="Zoe" last="Brooks"], Trenton Catholic, So.</strong> – Brooks garnered a ton of attention as a freshman for a powerhouse Trenton Catholic program. She finished with 13.5 points per game and had 16 games with five or more steals, totaling 134 steals on the season. A 5-foot-9 guard/forward, Brooks was the top scorer for the team and reached double figures 22 times. She also had 122 assists and 115 rebounds on the year. Trenton Catholic was 28-1 and finished the season with 23 straight wins prior to the season being cut short due to the pandemic.
<strong>Aaylah Del Rosario, Trenton Catholic, So. </strong>– Another freshman, Del Rosario was extremely productive for the Lady Mikes. She was tough to contain down low with 11.8 points per game and 11.6 rebounds per game. The sophomore had six double-doubles to open the season, and she totaled 12 on the year. Listed at 6-foot-6, Del Rosario is a nightmare matchup for most down low.
<strong>[player_tooltip player_id="134616" first="Ariel" last="Jenkins"], Stuart Day, Sr.</strong> – Jenkins, a Georgetown commit, was one of many contributors for Stuart Day. She averaged 11.2 points, 11.9 rebounds and 3.5 blocks per game as a 6-foot-3 power forward. The senior finished with 18 double-doubles on the year.
<strong>[player_tooltip player_id="134617" first="Nia" last="Melvin"], Stuart Day, Sr.</strong> – Melvin averaged 12.9 points per game and was a great all-around player with 155 rebounds, 129 assists, 89 steals and 59 3-pointers. She hit six 3-pointers against Moorestown Friends and five against Markham (Canada). Melvin totaled 20 double-figure games, with her season-high of 27 points coming against Northfield Mount Hermon of Massachusetts last January.
<strong>Maddie McCrea, Allentown, Sr.</strong> – McCrea averaged 14.6 points per game and finished with four 20-point games, including 25 against Trenton. She totaled 11 double-doubles on the season. The Allentown senior averaged 8.8 rebounds per game and she made 81 free throws on the year.
