Who are the Class of 2022’s Newcomers? By Michael Wholey 1/26/21 5:00 PM EST The Prep Girls Florida Hoops rankings are updated quarterly, and this is our first release of the Junior class in the year 2021. Look for these to updated again in April, June and September. The list of players in the 2022 class that are ranked was dramatically increased based on players we have seen in the past 6-8 months with over 150+ new names. Here are some of the highest ranked newcomers. # 9 [player_tooltip player_id="219953" first="Fernanda" last="Ovalle"] – 5’11 Guard / Wing (Montverde Academy) This is Fernanda’s second year in the state’s (she is from Chile) but she had yet to crack the rankings. She enters the 2022 rankings at # 12 as I believe she might be the state’s most under rated prospect regardless of class. She is a big, skilled guard who can score the basketball and at times play too unselfish and defers to her teammates. She can score off a penetrate and kick to knock down the 3, she can put it to the floor and pull up from mid-range, or she can get all the way to the rim. The combination of her great size, skill, and international experience will make her a coveted college prospect. # 15 [player_tooltip player_id="219993" first="Silkiari" last="Vazquez"] – 5’5 Point Guard (Central Pointe Academy) # 21 [player_tooltip player_id="219994" first="Naylee" last="Cortes"] – 5’9 Guard (Central Pointe Academy) # 23 [player_tooltip player_id="219996" first="Daniela" last="Gonzalez"] – 6’0 Wing (Central Pointe Academy) The three prospects all jump into the rankings as they have helped Central Pointe Academy to a # 9 national ranking (Maxpreps) in their first year in the states helping CPCA to a 20-1 record. Vazquez, Cortes, and Gonzalez hold down the 1, 2, and 3 for the White Tigers and are the teams 3 loading scorers averaging close to 10 points per game. And while they are all capable scorers, Gonzalez leads the team with 6.8 rebounds per game, Vazquez leads the team in assists at 4.9 per game, and Cortes leads the team in steals with 3.4 per game. # 16 [player_tooltip player_id="219954" first="Fatima" last="Diakhate"] – 6’6 Center (Montverde Academy / Essence) The Center hails from Canada continuing the international theme to the class of 2022s newcomers. Diakhate returned to Florida this season for her Junior campaign after spending last season in Canada as part of their national team program and her Freshman year at Deerfield Beach. At 6’6 she is the state’s tallest prospect and is an extremely intriguing college prospect. Most high level BCS teams have a player 6’4 or above that controls the paint and impacts the game as a shot blocker and rebounder. We have seen her progress since 7th grade and she has made tremendous strides with improved mobility, strength and skill development. Her ranking is still based on potential vs production at this point as to whether she will continue to improve and what she could potentially develop into as a college player by her junior season under a solid strength and conditioning program and a good post coach. # 37 [player_tooltip player_id="243958" first="Sydney" last="Gomes"] – 5’8 Shooting Guard (Nease HS / FGB) Gomes is currently doing a little bit of everything for Nease High School helping them to a 16-5 record. She is leading her team in scoring (21.4 PPG) and is second in rebounding (7.5), assists (2.8), and steals (3.1). Gomes is getting it done as a scorer in a variety of ways shooting over 35% from 3, and 73% from the free throw line and getting to the free throw line 7 times per game. # 56 [player_tooltip player_id="243961" first="Janay" last="Quinn"] – 5’2 Point Guard (Miami Sr. HS / Miami Suns South) Quinn does a little bit of everything for the Lady Stingrays. She is a high-octane guard who is extremely active on both ends of the floor. On the defensive end, she picks up opposing point guard baseline to baseline and is quite the thief consistently picking their pockets. Offensively she is an aggressive penetrator who loves to attack in transition. At 5’2 she is small in size but more than makes up for it with her energy, competitive spirit, and aggressiveness. # 60 [player_tooltip player_id="243964" first="Catalina" last="Ion"] – 6’1 Wing (IMG Academy) Ion joined IMG Academy for the 2020-21 season, relocating from Romania. She is the third Romania player to join IMG Academy in the last several seasons (Sarah Dumitrescu -Ole Miss and Antonia Alexe – Winthrop have suited up for IMG each of the last 2 seasons). Ion is a big wing/forward who can shoot the 3 from deep, put it to the floor from the perimeter and high post, as well work the interior of defenses at the mid post. She has a solid build with a good combination of strength and size, can be an effective rebounder, and has a quick release. # 62 [player_tooltip player_id="219955" first="Adout" last="Ring"] – 6’4 Wing/Forward (West Oaks Academy / DME Travel) Ring and her sister [player_tooltip player_id="219958" first="Amou" last="Ring"] (Embry Riddle signee) made the move from The Rock School to West Oaks Academy. [player_tooltip player_id="219955" first="Adout" last="Ring"] has an extremely unique body and skill set as most players that are 6’4 are strictly post players, while Adout is almost exclusively a perimeter player. She has a long, slender build with an impressive wing-span. She is still growing into her body and needs to get stronger and become more coordinated. As those things come together and her skill set continues to develop, [player_tooltip player_id="219955" first="Adout" last="Ring"] has the potential to develop into a consistent productive high school player and ultimately a college prospect. Michael Wholey is the Senior Scout of Prep Girls Hoops Florida. You can reach him at WholeyPrepHoops@gmail.com or on Twitter and Instagram at @WholeyPrepHoops.
