There has been at least one thing that has gone back to normal in the last twelve months and that is the domination of Ewing High School’s girls basketball team.
After a very uncharacteristic 12-11 record last season Ewing is off and running in 2021, going 8-0 out of the gate. Not only is Ewing winning these games, they’re winning them handedly. Out of the 8 wins only 2 have come by single digits, they are winning games by an average of 23.5 points.
The Blue Devils are no longer letting teams stick around in games, they aren’t letting off the gas and finishing games like they have in the past. One of the reasons for this is the team is so much deeper than they have been in the past, they can play true difference makers for the entirety of the game. Once the bench unit comes onto the court the team isn’t losing any production, other teams aren’t afforded that luxury.
Ewing is getting production from every player on the roster no matter the age. This year the team is led in scoring by freshman Joi Johnson, she is on fire to start the year with averages of 15.2 points, 13.1 points and 3.5 blocks. She has been a force down low but when she is having an off night the team can quickly go to other players to pick up the slack.
Another player surprising many this early has been Rhian Stokes, the freshman guard who has been a nice complement to the inside presence of Johnson. Stokes has shown her ability to be active in all aspects of the game, in her first eight varsity games she is averaging 11.1 points, 5.6 rebounds and assists and 5.5 steals per game.
While the freshmen class has stepped up so far their senior counterparts have been helpful as well, both Geneece Boone (8.8 points and 6.8 rebounds) and Tamia Warner (7.7 points and 4.1 rebounds) have been doing their part to add to a winning culture.
The Blue Devils seem to have turned the page from a disappointing year and are now back on the road to pure domination. Fans can look at the incredible depth of the team as the catalyst for the quick turn around. In a loaded Colonial Valley Conference Ewing High School looks like an early frontrunner to break through as a true state powerhouse.
