Both teams have come out of the gates a bit sluggish but seem to be back on the right track, this matchup would give either side an important win in a diction that could come down to the wire. In the end it was Jackson Liberty taking home the 46-42 win and moving to 5-4 on the season.
st Star: Maura Carney, Jackson Liberty: In a game that came down to the wire Maura Carney made sure that every time she touched the ball she was making a winning play. She ended the night with a game high 22 points and 11 rebounds but also chipped in with 4 assists, a steal and a block. To put it simply Carney was everywhere, showing her abilities on both ends of the court, most impressively quickly transitioning from an inside scorer to a player willing to launch from deep. It was an incredible all around game and the type of game that will put the senior in the running for conference player of the year if she can continue to put up those performances consistently.
nd Star: Chelsea Lavezzo, Jackson Liberty: While most of the eyes were on Carney in this one Chelsea Lavezzo did a great job of separating herself from her teammates. The freshman ended up stuffing the stat sheet in this one, finishing with 13 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 steals and a block. Just like Carney she was incredibly active, playing an incredibly smart game and not giving Point Pleasant Boro any extra opportunities. From the jump Lavezzo proved she could be a difference maker in her first year, performances like this prove that she will be a name to look at for the next few years.
rd Star: Genevieve Fara, Point Pleasant Boro: Although Point Pleasant Boro didn’t come out with the win in this game they still got production on all the players they have relied on this year. Genevieve Fara led the team in scoring with 13 points, even making a three pointer down the stretch. While Fara has been known to be more of a presence in the paint she has grown as an outside shooter, already hitting the same amount of three pointers (3) this year as she had last year but in 13 less games.
th Star: Erika Marinella, Point Pleasant Boro: Erika Marinella ended this matchup second on Point Pleasant Boro in scoring with 12 points, and while it wasn’t enough to come away with a win she showed significant improvement from where she was last year. Already a consistent presence on offense Marinella seems more willing to attack the basket and draw contact, something she should continue to build on as the season progresses. Her three point range will help the team from being one dimensional down the road of a long season, something she proved to be true with two shots from deep in this one.
th Star: Ashleigh Tavaska, Jackson Liberty: The points were hard to come by for Ashleigh Tavaska in this matchup, but her fingerprints were still all over the game. The senior ended the night with 4 points, 11 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals so even though she wasn’t the one scoring a ton she was still making winning plays. Rock solid down low Tavaska made like tough for opponents driving the lane which helped Jackson Liberty just enough to come out with a razor thin win.
