Somehow, someway.....the class of 2024 will be playing basketball soon. That much I’m sure of. It’s time we get to know these young ladies games since we will be seeing them a bunch over the course of their high school careers. One of the best ways to get to know a player’s game, is compare them to someone that we may be more familiar with. I’ll take 4 freshman and pair them each with a senior that reminds me, in some way, of them.
Reagan Byrd (2024, PG, Carrollton) - Kayionna Willis (2021, PG, Southfield A & T)
Byrd is a quick floor general with a fast first step. I feel like she’s really got a chance to develop into an explosive floor general. That sounds a lot like Willis. She uses her first step and dribble drive to break down the defense and create for herself and her teammates.
[player_tooltip player_id="244301" first="Ryan" last="Moorer"] (2024, SG, Madison Heights Bishop Foley) - [player_tooltip player_id="138318" first="Desiree" last="Jackson"] (2021, SG, Detroit Cass Tech)
Moorer is a smooth athlete that has already proven that she’s ready for the big stage of high school basketball. Jackson has that same athleticism, to an elite scale. She also walked into high school ready to contribute.
[player_tooltip player_id="244277" first="Jordan" last="Peterson"] (2024, PF, Birmingham Groves) - [player_tooltip player_id="28017" first="Shannon" last="Wheeler"] (2021, PF, Detroit Renaissance)
Peterson appears to stepping into a leadership role right off the jump as a freshman. My guess is that she’s more than ready for the challenge. That’s why I’d compare her to Wheeler. If you ask me, [player_tooltip player_id="28017" first="Shannon" last="Wheeler"] is one of the best leaders in Michigan.
Brooke Simpson (2024, SG, Belding) - Paige Van Stee (2021, SF, Thornapple-Kellogg)
Simpson might be the most versatile player in the freshman class. She does so much at a high level. Van Stee is molded in that same fashion. She plays positionless basketball and contributes in some way in every single game that she plays in.
