Coming into the tournament with a 3-8 record most looked at Deptford as an early out in the tournament but they surprised many by turning on the jets when games mattered most.
As the top seed in Bracket C Deptford earned a bye in the opening round, they followed that up with a big momentum gaining win over Schalick 38-26 in the semifinal round. On the other side of the bracket Pitman won their first two matchups of the playoffs over #7 Cumberland and #3 Triton by a combined five points. They came into this championship game with a 7-7 record, relying heavily on a very young roster to get them to this point.
For the most part this game was close, Deptford only led Pitman 35-31 heading into the fourth quarter but it was a late surge by the winners that gave them the edge down the stretch. As a whole Deptford got contributions from everyone who earned minutes in this game, every single player scored and had a positive effect on the final score. It was senior Mahogany Collins and junior Amaris Bussie that led the team in scoring with ten points a piece, while none of the now champions had an insane stat line everyone on the roster did something, it was a complete team effort and something they can carry into next year with Bussie leading the team.
As a whole Bracket C seemed a bit underwhelming, but the play of Deptford down the stretch showed future teams that they can no longer underestimate a team because of a slow regular season. The Tri-County Conference is home to some o the best teams and players in the state, they compete at a high level day in and day out, this is just more proof that Deptford can hang with those top teams despite a misleading record.
