Throughout much of the Bracket A tournament the favorites controlled their games, bit it was the #6 seed Timber Creek team that crashed the party.
Sitting at 8-3 to start their tournament run Timber Creek felt like a team that could outperform their seeding, and boy did they prove that throughout tournament play. They beat up on #3 seed Woodstown 56-36 in the first round and followed that up with a very complete victory against a #2 seed Kingsway team that many thought could win the entire tournament. Timber Creek’s work wasn’t over yet, as they had to face off against the top seeded Gloucester Catholic Rams in the finals.
All season Timber Creek has relied heavily on their two star players in Amaya Burch and Amiaya Morgan to bring them down the stretch of games, this was no different. As a lower seed you would expect Timber Creek to come in with some nerves, but with Burch and Morgan on the court you would have thought they were massive favorites in this matchup.
While the score only showed an eight point victory for Timber Creek by a final of 46-38, it does not show just how thoroughly Timber Creek dominated this game. Both Burch and Morgan finished with 14 points, Burch adding 8 rebounds and Morgan chipping in with 6 assists on the way to the victory in which they led by 14 at the half. Their gameplay of shutting down all of Gloucester Catholic’s weapons outside of top scorer Angelina Barrera worked, Barrera had an outstanding game with 18 points but she didn’t get any help from the supporting cast. In the end the swarming defense of Timber Creek was just too much to handle.
Amiaya Morgan ends her high school career on top but this might not be the end of domination for Timber Creek as they return Amaya Burch and the rest of a great supporting cast including Juliana Coluccio and Taja Brown next season. A Bracket A Championship for Timber Creek should open a lot of eyes around the state, this team has lasting power.
