The team lost four of their last five heading into postseason play and finished the regular season an underwhelming 7-8. But as we all know anything can happen in the postseason and Williamstown looked like they were just saving their best basketball for the end of the year.
The #6 seeded Braves dominated their first round matchup against #3 seed Pennsville 64-45, their second round game wasn’t as easy. Williamstown had to fight off late efforts from #2 seed Delsea in overtime in the semifinal round but did come out victorious 59-53 behind huge games from Cailey Appenzeller and Iriona Gravley (17 points each). The only thing standing between Williamstown and an improbable championship were the top seeded Wildwood Warriors.
This game was incredibly back and forth. Williamstown came out firing and led the first quarter 17-10 but Wildwood was able to weather the storm in a big way in the second quarter, outscoring Williamstown 13-2 and taking a four point lead into halftime. Whatever Williamstown coach Jaime Land said to the team at halftime worked because the Braves dominated the entirety of the second half.
A 10-2 third quarter gave the Braves a four point lead in which they would not give up for the rest of the game. Williamstown won the battle in the fourth quarter to wrap up an improbable Bracket B Championship over Wildwood 44-36. Junior guard Maxine Ampofo saved her best game of the season for the final game, she led the Braves in scoring with 13 points in the win while her teammates Ava Eberly (10 points) and Jilonne Daley (7 points) helped seal the victory.
Wildwood’s star player Jenna Hans did all she could to keep things close, she ended the night with a game high 21 points and 7 rebounds, making 11 shots from the free throw line to make things interesting. In the end she just didn’t get enough help from the rest of the supporting cast, a valiant effort nonetheless.
This is a win Williamstown should be extremely proud of. They weathered the storm throughout the regular season and were able to show what a united team can do when it’s winning time.
