As I’m in the process of adding prospects to the database for rankings, I wanted to stop and recognize some point guards that stood out during the process and are worth a good mention. Being a former point guard, I have a high appreciation of solid point guard play. Below are a variety of point guards that have become favorites as I start the process of studying Nebraska girls high school basketball.
** Some of the analysis is random and processed as I see it and jot it down. So it essentially could be bulleted but I have it in sentence form**
[player_tooltip player_id="94543" first="Megan" last="Belt"] - (5’7/PG/2022) - Millard South

PGH Nebraska is very high on [player_tooltip player_id="94543" first="Megan" last="Belt"] and the way she plays the point guard position. Megan has all the tools that make up a point guard. Poised with the ball and confident against pressure and full-court pressure. A very sound defender that understands team defense and where she needs to be positioned for defending gaps. Megan may be underrated to those that simply look at box scores, but if you understand point guard play, she’s a highly coveted prospect.
[player_tooltip player_id="279134" first="Matalynn" last="Campbell"] - (5’7/PG/2022) - Lincoln East

Matalynn is an athletic point guard type. She uses her athletic ability to make plays in a bunch of stat categories. Plays with good effort and has fun using her athleticism. She put up averages of 11.0 points, 5.0 rebounds, 3.4 assists, and 3.1 steals. So she is very active making plays throughout an entire game. Has some good ball-handling moves and counter moves to create separation to get to the hoop. Not a sustaining ball-handler but has some nifty moves with the ball. Has above average speed and can turn on a second gear with the ball. Understands the game and how to find ways to score with the ball in her hands. If she improved her ball-handling, Matalynn could be a very tough defensive matchup for opposing teams and would improve her scoring average, as her limitation causes her to give the ball up prematurely at times. Good overall defensive playing strength and can’t be pushed around in the low-post. In the state tournament, had a double-double with 16 points and 11 boards. Good overall playmaker and scoring guard, but not a true point guard quite yet. A college player with some ball-handling upside.
[player_tooltip player_id="277896" first="Mariyah" last="Avila"] - (5’5/PG/2022) - Scottsbluff

Mariyah is a rare point guard in my opinion. With her super high energy and elite quickness. Her elite quickness combined with her superb conditioning make her a difficult matchup for opposing point guard defenders. She simply doesn’t get tired or stop. Can push the ball in transition with exceptional speed and ball control. Very quick defensive hands and lateral movement. You can regularly see her getting into the lane with a hop-step and then dish-off to teammates. On top of all her athletic traits, she’s deadly from three-point land.
[player_tooltip player_id="279314" first="Destiny" last="Shepherd"] - (5’5/PG/2022) - York -

Destiny was the second leading scorer for York at 9.0 points per game. Shooting the three she was 28-90 for 31%. A solid guard that has good quickness that can create separation to run the offense effectively. Pass-first point guard that loves getting teammates involves and makes the extra pass. Passes up her open shots if a teammate has the same look. Solid handles and can perform a lightning quick crossover. Has good enough speed and quickness to chase defensively around traffic and screens and stay within close distance of the opposing offensive player. Bottom line, Destiny is another true point guard that might not stand out to the average spectator but she is very beneficial and valuable to her team's success. She handles the ball, sets up the offense, plays with pace, and can be a threat from three.
[player_tooltip player_id="279006" first="Shanae" last="Bergt"] - (5’9/PG/2022) - Lincoln Lutheran
I also appreciate a point guard with good length, and that’s what Shanae offers to the table. looks as though she has length of a six-foot prospect. Shanae plays on a team with a balanced scoring attack so she may not standout on paper. Shanae has a good combination of length, speed, and first-step quickness. Attacks quickly and with speed off of high ball screens. Moves very well without the ball and you can even see her v-cutting to get open. Defensively, she moves extremely well in all directions. Bottom line, Shanae has some good potential going forward onto the next level as she's a long and skilled point guard that has the basketball IQ to top it off.
