There were a number of outstanding 2023’s during the 2020-2021 girls basketball season. In this post, we look at a handful great young players who improved their stock in our state rankings.
[player_tooltip player_id="214501" first="Ashley" last="Kerekes"] - 5’11 Forward - Copley
Kerekes was dominant at times this year for a very-young Copley squad. The All-Ohioan has more upside than most other 2023’s. She runs the court extremely well for a forward and does a nice job of finishing around the rim with both hands. Ashley is active as a rebounder and also blocks a number of shots throughout the course of each game.
[player_tooltip player_id="157706" first="Kylie" last="Leibacher"] - 5’11 Wing - Margaretta
Leibacher is a big-time recruit who is moving up recruiting boards. With her strong frame and relentless approach to the game, you could argue that she is physically ready to play at the college level right now. That’s not to say that she isn’t very skilled - she has a smooth stroke that stretches all the way out to 3-point range and will also initiate the offense as a point-forward after a defensive rebound.
[player_tooltip player_id="217076" first="Alexa" last="Hocevar"] - 6’0 Wing - West Geauga
Hocevar does so many things well on the basketball floor. At 6’0 - she has a great floater that she can get off whenever she wants. She is solid in catch-and-shoot situations from 3 and is truly dynamic in transition. An outstanding rebounder - Hocevar is a true 2-way player, as she creates many turnovers each night for her team.
[player_tooltip player_id="93545" first="Tomi" last="Hinkle"] - 5’7 Guard - Proctorville Fairland
Hinkle has some of the deepest range of anyone shooting the basketball in Ohio. She is a high IQ player who can go and get a bucket for herself or create one for her teammates. She is able to finish with both hands in transition off of steals. Her motor is an asset that every coach loves - she always comes to compete. Tomi is unquestionably one of Southern Ohio’s top players.
[player_tooltip player_id="270515" first="Ella" last="Lunsford"] - 5’8 Guard - Dalton
There were questions about who would pick up the scoring load in Dalton with 4-year All-Ohioan [player_tooltip player_id="89267" first="Makenna" last="Geiser"] heading to Ashland University. [player_tooltip player_id="270515" first="Ella" last="Lunsford"] answered those questions quickly. A dynamic scorer at all 3 levels - Lunsford, a lefty, is silky-smooth with the basketball in her hands. She has nice length from the perimeter to finish over help-side defenders and is confident as a 3-point shooter in catch-and-shoot spots. Her ceiling is very high.
