Prep Girls Hoops has been hard at work covering the entirety of the Garden State, and now with seasons over, it’s season recap time.
PGH NJ has been recapping the Greater Middlesex Conference in full and our season recap series of the GMC continues in this article, talking about the best players in the Gold division.
Raegan Fogarty – G/F, Calvary Christian
Fogarty ended up leading Calvary Christian in scoring as a sophomore and is a promising player for this program, one that’s losing two impact seniors going into the 2021-22 season. She averaged 11.0 PPG, 5.3 RPG, 3.7 BPG, 1.2 made threes a game and 1.1 SPG in 2021 and was one of the best shot-blockers in the state last season. Fogarty also showed her perimeter game, shooting lights out from beyond the arc. With a year of high school under her belt, she’s shown that she isn’t afraid to shoot it anywhere on the floor and with that added confidence has come a wave of success.
Hena Thakkar – F/G, Woodbridge Academy
Thakkar was part of a dangerous junior tandem with Maya Fenyk, and the two really helped to boost Woodbridge Academy’s play within the division, where they went 9-4 in 2021. Thakkar averaged 14.8 PPG, 8.9 RPG, one made three and block a game, and 3.5 SPG this season, a strong junior campaign. She showed a massive improvement shooting from outside the arc, going from hitting four in one season to one a game. That addition to her play style will only help her moving forward as she moves away from a strict forward playing on the interior to some who can truly spread the floor on both sides of the ball.
Fiona Shanahan – G, Somerset Tech
Shanahan is one of the best perimeter shooters in the conference and she showed that this season, hitting 1.7 a game. She averaged 12.3 PPG, 2.6 RPG & APG, and 1.8 SPG during the 2021 season for Somerset Tech, but it was her shooting that caught the eyes of many. Somerset Tech features primarily her as a shooting guard, and she really excels at that position. Shanahan is just a sophomore, so expect her to continue shooting early and often from the perimeter, but watch as she develops her overall game around her shooting ability. The extra focus teams will need to guard her outside the perimeter will help create space to drive in for even more scoring opportunities.
Kayla Martel – G, Wardlaw-Hartridge
Martel burst onto the scene in the GMC as a freshman, already leading Wardlaw-Hartridge in scoring in her first high school season. She averaged 9.5 PPG, 3.5 RPG and 2.4 SPG this season, showing an adept ability to score in the paint and the interior, while excelling as a pesky defender, causing a number of turnovers that resulted in prime scoring opportunities for Wardlaw-Hartidge. Her ceiling is continuing to rise, so expect her to grow into a team leader role in time and develop her overall game into one at a superstar level.
Jamiyah Alston – F/G, Piscataway Tech
Alston has a strong junior season for Piscataway Tech, solidifying herself as a must-watch forward for next season. In eight games, Alston averaged 19.3 PPG, 11.6 RPG, 3.5 BPG and 2.4 SPG, just mind-boggling numbers for the junior. In just her second season playing on varsity, she’s emerged as this team’s go-to all-around player, a fantastic scorer with incredible shot-blocking skills. She’s one of the players to watch across the entire conference going into the 2021-22 season without a doubt.
