With the grassroots season now in full swing, teams and individuals are really beginning to hit their stride and show what they are capable of. With that in mind, here are seven standout 2023 prospects from the tournament:
Monica Marsh Monica Marsh 5'6" | CG Plano West | 2023 State TX | 2023 | 5’6” Combo Guard | Texas Platinum 16U Walker | Plano West HS – Marsh was brilliant as a scorer, getting it done from all three levels. Her shot-making ability off the dribble is next level. She was an assassin from mid-range and efficient from beyond the arc. The 2023 guard is truly a dynamic shooter.
Samantha Basson | 2023 | 5’8” Point Guard | Texas LoneStar Black – 3SSB | Lovejoy HS – Basson was sensational at the PGH Texas Top 250 Expo last year, and she was excellent this weekend too. The Lovejoy floor general has a great feel for the game, was deadly accurate as a passer, and displayed great vision. Her playmaking is always impressive.
Salese Blow | 2023 | 5’10” Point Guard | Texas Platinum 16U Walker | Plano Senior HS – Blow possesses effortless athleticism. She was getting past defenders with ease, going coast-to-coast on numerous occasions. The Plano Senior guard was extremely productive as a slasher and dangerous anytime she got downhill. Beyond that, Blow was solid as a perimeter defender and contributed on the boards.
Tatum West | 2023 | 6’1” Power Forward | HG Elite 2023 | Crandall HS – West showed off some good-looking post moves on Saturday. The Crandall big was great at absorbing contact in the paint and lights out from the foul line whenever she earned a trip there. Her rebounding at both ends was great as well as her rim protection on defense.
Sahvani Sancho | 2023 | 5’7” Combo Guard | SA Finest Ki Will | Wagner HS – Sancho scored from all three levels in the matchup I saw her play in. She knocked down a spot-up three and some off-balanced mid-range shots. The Wagner prospect looked relaxed and comfortable at both guard spots, while also defending well on the perimeter. She put together a well-rounded performance.
Payton Hull Payton Hull 5'4" | SG Peaster | 2023 State TX | 2023 | 5’11” Combo Guard | Texas LoneStar Black – 3SSB | Peaster HS – Hull did a little bit of everything on Saturday. She looked good as a facilitator, making good decisions and delivering accurate passes. The Peaster guard was good at scoring near the basket too, posting up mismatches on the block and attacking off the dribble with great success. Additionally, she was incredibly disruptive on defense.
Idara Udo | 2023 | 6’1” Center | DC Queens (White) | Plano East HS – Udo really impressed me in Plano East’s playoff matchup against South Grand Prairie. The soon to be junior caught my attention once again this weekend. She is so strong in the post and possesses good touch around the rim. She was dominant on the boards at both ends of the floor as well. This is certainly someone to watch moving forward.
