However, through the sacrifices of many across the state, we were treated to some semblance of a season, and what a season it was.
Prep Girls Hoops has been doing its part, talking about the best of the best up and down the state this season. That continues in this article as PGH NJ resumes its multi-part series recapping the Shore Conference.
It’s time to finish up the best players from all eight pods as Pods 7 & 8 are highlighted in this article.
Mary Elizabeth Donnelly – G, Manasquan
Donnelly was one of three major impact players this season for Manasquan, but the junior came into her own in 2021, really emerging as a true team leader now as a veteran in the program. She averaged nearly 14.7 PPG, along with 8.5 RPG, 2.7 APG, 1.8 SPG and 1.2 made threes a game. She was truly clicking on all cylinders in 2021, showing versatility as a guard that can play the role of a forward. Donnelly showed that her inside game is just as good as her outside game, crashing the boards often. That, combined with an effortless ability to score, made her one of the most dangerous players in the Shore Conference this season.
Abby Antognoli – G, St. Rose
Antognoli had nothing short of an impressive and dominant season for St. Rose in 2021, ending her high school career with a spectacular senior season. She averaged 20.3 PPG, 3.9 RPG, 5.1 APG, 2.5 SPG and 1.7 made threes a game as a senior, helping carry St. Rose to an 11-4 record and 8-2 record in Pod 7 play. Antognoli was a player that could do just about anything on the court on both sides of the ball, pairing up well with fellow guards Rosie Scognamiglio, Avery Morgan and Niasya Ervin. However, this season, the team very much flowed through Antognoli as she showed a well-rounded game, including impressive three-point shooting, immaculate passing and stout perimeter defense.
Allison House – G/F, Point Pleasant Beach
House finished her senior season on a high for Point Pleasant Beach, leading the team in scoring as they finished 10-5 overall and 7-1 in Pod 8 play. She averaged 12.4 PPG this season while taking over much more of a veteran role in the program in her final high school season. She didn’t let the abbreviated season go to waste as she developed much more in terms of versatility, though most of her game was played in the interior. House carved up defenses and drew contact often, sending her to the line where she knocked down two free throws a game on average this season. This was truly the culmination of a superstar career for House.
Ahjanae Young – G, Neptune
Neptune was unable to play a full, 15-game schedule during the 2021 season, but that didn’t stop Young from breaking out in her junior year, averaging 13.1 PPG, 4.5 RPG and 2.6 SPG. She, along with Amaya Evans Amaya Evans 5'5" | PG Neptune | 2022 State NJ , were the spark plugs on offense and excelled well together as a guard duo. Young, in particular, put up a career-high scoring average in 2021 and was a much more frequent three-point shooter, knocking down more per game than both of her first two seasons at Neptune. The development of her outside game is a welcomed change as she’ll be able to add another asset to her game, one that has heads turning across the state.
Brooke Hollawell Brooke Hollawell 5'6" | PG Manasquan | 2022 State NJ – G, Manasquan
Hollawell has been one of Manasquan’s best outside threads in quite some time, and her and senior guard Allison Waters created one of the most dangerous shooting duos in the conference. The junior Hollawell averaged 14.1 PPG, 1.8 made three-pointers a game and 1.8 SPG during the 2021 season. She’s been hovering around the two made threes a game mark for the past two-straight seasons, including 2021, and after the maturity she showed as a junior, she’s poised to break that threshold next season. Hollawell can turn on the jets in the lane and her high basketball IQ helps her create space for scoring opportunities. The best part: we get to enjoy one more season of her on the court for Manasquan next season.
