With safety measures in place, the entire event went off well and there were several key players on display in downtown Pittsburgh.
Over the next several days, I will turn attention to some of the top players I saw in action. I focused on the Ohio teams or teams with Ohio players, but did see a few out of state clubs. I did not see everyone play, so these aren’t the top players ranked in any order, just some of the more talented players in action.
We will look at point guards first with five talented ones today.
5 talented Point Guards
Emily Bratton Emily Bratton 5'7" | SG Bloom Carroll | 2024 State OH , 5-7 2024 Ohio Future 2024
This kid was the first player I noticed in the first game of the day on Saturday. Very poised for such a young player who has an unlimited ceiling. she has very solid handles and flashy, gets the job done and controls the offense for her team. Very productive with and without the ball for her team, she can shoot the rock from long range and is a heady player who looks for the best shot for her team. Can score with either hand. Taylor Stanley Taylor Stanley 5'7" | CG Cincinnati Mount Notre Dame | 2023 State OH , 5-6 2023, Ohio Elite 2023
The epitome of what a true point guard does. She shines in the biggest games, can set up her team and directs traffic on the court. She is a premier leader and is a solid on-ball defender. Elite passer and is ok scoring when needed. Very good court vision and when she does score, she has good range from the perimeter.
Gwen Stare Gwen Stare 5'9" | SG Newark | 2022 State OH , 5-8 2022 Ohio Future Black 2022
One thing I noticed quickly about her was her leadership and knack for getting the ball in her hands. Was impressed with her game on their run to the state finals at Newark, now in the summer she leads by example. She can put the ball on the floor and get by her defender to score at the rim. Good court awareness. Impressive next-level prospect and she does the little things right and plays the game the right way. Pictured right
Mari Gerton, 5-7 2025, Ohio XPress 2025
Young but talented, Mari looks to continue to impress and improve her game. She is with a club who will make her better and prepare her for when she steps onto the court as a freshman next season. She is a solid point guard who loves to get into the flow of the offense. Has developed good, aggressive defensive skills and uses them to create offense for her team. Also a good three-point threat.
Bri Claxon Bri Claxon 5'7" | PG South Webster | 2022 State OH , 5-6 2022, Team Ohio Connor
If you want to see a very talented offensive player, you need to see Bri play this summer. Very shifty guard with elite athletic ability. Able to score from anywhere on the court and she elevates well for her shot. Good footwork and gets to the right spots to create a shot for herself or her team. Quick and can penetrate to the rim and finish. One of the most underrated kids in Ohio in her class.
