Of the approximate 65 teams that descended upon Wichita Hoops this past weekend 17 composed the three pools of the Prep Girls Hoops Circuit event Battle in the Sunflower. Players from Texas, Louisiana, Missouri, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Colorado, Arkansas, and Kansas showed their talents in front of college coaches attending in person and watching from afar on BallerTV. I was one of three Prep Girls Hoops scouts covering the action. My colleagues from Oklahoma Jason Green and Michael Knight were also prowling the sidelines. It took both days to see every team at least once as the action was fast and furious across the 11 courts. Without further ado, enjoy these lists of players earning a spot on the 17U Battle in the Sunflower all-tournament teams.
First Team
[player_tooltip player_id="156307" first="Mariyah" last="Noel"] , 5'11″, W/SF, Bonner Springs (KS), 2023, KC Royalty 2022 – Noel made a strong case for being the most versatile player not just at her position but also on the floor all day. She showed a good first step to get to attack speed as well as inside game capabilities. Noel scored very well in the mid-range off the bounce and out of face-up and back-to-basket games. Once inside, she put together multiple post moves to create a shot. [player_tooltip player_id="197958" first="Morgan" last="Borgstadt"], 6'0″, W/SF, Virdigris (OK), 2023, Shock 2022 Black – Borgstadt showed strength and good movement on interior scores. With handles to get into the lane, she protected the ball well on wing drives to finish. Lelani Krause, 5'11", PF/C, Widefield (CO), 2021, P.L.U.T.O. Prospects 2022 - Krause was a force on both ends of the floor. Her ability to defend with quickness when extended away from the basket was impressive and challenged physically inside. She showed handles to swiftly go end-to-end off the rebound, strength to finish around the basket, and three point range. Jayden Weiberg, 5'7″, SG, Madill (OK), 2022, Oklahoma Swish 2022 Foreman – Weiberg showed off strong handles, quickness, and speed on both ends of the floor. Her play in the team's opening game made a statement of her ability as a three point shooter. She finished with 19 points on 6/10 shooting - all made threes. [player_tooltip player_id="260050" first="Aleksandra" last="Duda"], 6'4″, C, Life Prep, 2022, Next Level Eclipse 2022 Life (KS) – Duda has great size and length. She also runs the floor well Athleticism shows in spots and it is apparent it is only going to get better. It shows with her shot selection around the basket, where she scores well. She also has a quick release on her mid-range jumpers.
Second Team
[player_tooltip player_id="211894" first="Abby" last="Schroeder"], 5'8", PG, Southwest Covenant (OK), 2023, Oklahoma Swish 2022 Knox - Schroeder showed off some of the best handles of the event. She sets her feet well and is a good perimeter shooter. Schroeder's floor IQ is high and she attacks the basket with strength. Ann Zachariah, 6'1", SF, Life Prep (KS), 2022, Next Level Eclipse 2022 Life - Fast with good size and length Zachariah had a terrific second day where she showed off the diversity of her game. While she has three point range her strength is her mid-range jumper. Whether pulling up in transition, going up off the catch, or with a power dribble infused turnaround Zachariah scored it very well. She also showed transition speed with the ball and hustle on the break to receive a pass to finish. Kassidy Warr, 5'9", W, Northside (AR), Oklahoma Fusion 2022 Barlow - Solid, strong build and finishes athletically in transition. Elevates well in rebounds and perimeter jumper. Basket drive down the lane to score shot blocker challenges. [player_tooltip player_id="197960" first="Baylor" last="Franz"], 5'7", CG, Edmund Memorial (OK), Oklahoma Fusion 2022 Foreman - Franz shot quickly off the kickout catch, hit threes with range, and made solid bounce passes on entry looks. Tiyianna Coulter-Hill, 6'0″, PF, Fort Bend Hightower (TX), 2024, Lady Drive Nation Houston 2022 – A great athlete with size and length Coulter-Hill gets to the hoop fast and finishes with elevation. She had the play of the day, that caused many draws to drop, when she caught a pass in transition on the right wing, went to the hole by covering the last 15' between defenders with two long steps, and finished with elevation and length.
Third Team
[player_tooltip player_id="127287" first="Summya" last="Adigun"], 5'8″, CG, Hugoton (KS), 2023, Western Kansas Elite 2022 Adigun/Nichols – Solid three point shooter off the catch and a good free throw shooter. She hustled, rebounded, and showed terrific leg strength and hops to create; rebound; and finish. Smalls Goudeaux, 5'9″, Tahlequah (OK), 2022, PG, Shock 2022 Black – Goudeau showed herself to be a high IQ, savvy player with very solid half court ball skills. She ran the 2-on-1 break well and finished well with speed. [player_tooltip player_id="94005" first="Rachel" last="Fischer"], 2022, C/PF, 6'0″, Medicine Lodge (KS), 2022, Western Kansas Elite 2022 Adigun/Nichols – Fischer has good physical size and strength and is a terrific scorer around the basket off the catch or rebound. She is also a physical player who plays hard on both ends, hustles in transition, and has a solid mid-range game. She was among the best players regardless of level at tracking where the shot was going to come from, enabling her to gain rebounding position before an opponent knew what was happening. [player_tooltip player_id="211889" first="Shayla" last="Wofford"], 6'3", C, Ada (OK), 2022, Team Griffin 17U Select - Wofford has a strong back-to-basket game and can score athletically out of it. She has solid size and transition speed also. Payton Kutz, 5'6″, St. Mary's (CO), 2022, PG, P.L.U.T.O. Prospects 2022 – Kutz was the straw that stirred the team drink. She defended, shot, and attacked the basket well.
Honorable Mention
Olivia Allen, 5'6″, Southside (Batesville, AR), 2022, Shock 2022 Gold Sa'yere Akari Banks, 5'10", PF, St. Michael the Archangel (MO), 2022, Della Lamb 2022 Gold Avery Barber, 5'9″, W/SF, St. Joe Central (MO), 2023, KC Royalty 2022 Gabby Beauprerthuy, 6'2", SF, Doherty (CO), 2022, P.L.U.T.O.
