Coker, home of the Cobras, competes in the NCAA as a Division II school. Thursday’s camp featured Sumter, Lakeside, First Baptist and Ridge View among other teams. There will be a second camp the following week.
Prep Girls Hoops made the trip to Hartsville to take in the action and get an early glimpse of what some of these teams may look like heading into the 2021-22 season. Here are more from the class of 2022 that stood out.
Alicia Spann Alicia Spann 6'2" | C Sumter | 2022 State SC – Sumter HS – Coach Jeff Schaffer has to be very thrilled at the paint presence that his team will present when the 2021-22 season tips off this fall. Spann provides that presence. She will make a great deal of plays near the rim – including rebounding and converting on high-percentage shot opportunities. That meant she drew plenty of attention which means opportunities at absorbing contact and getting to the free throw line. In addition to finding success on the basketball court, she has also made accomplishment in track and field by winning a 5A state championship in the discus throw.
Alexia Grant Alexia Grant 5'11" | CG First Baptist | 2022 State SC – First Baptist School – Speaking of TMP travel players – she isnother where it has become more than well-documented what she can do. Simply her presence on a basketball court is one where a coach has to be thinking how to contain her. With her skillset which includes a potent 3-point shot, a mid range jumper, the ability to drive to the rim and draw contact and the possibility of stealing the ball, that is a tall task for any opponent. Grant can put points on the board from anywhere on the floor and throughout her career she has put more than 1,000 points on scoreboards.
Tiana Spann Tiana Spann 6'2" | PF First Baptist | 2022 State SC – First Baptist School – Speaking of Spanns who are also tall. Also, speaking of players who we have seen plenty of via the travel circuit with TMP. For lots of opponents who she is up against, she presents almost an immediate mismatch that is in her favor. Spann will get her share of contact and will find herself at the free throw line. She is one that a defender cannot afford to leave open in the low post because that is practically an automatic pair of points for First Baptist or TMP. Spann provides a good bit of rebounding assistance as well and those offensive boards can turn into points also.
Mia Wysong – First Baptist School – Speaking of First Baptist Hurricanes that proved to be integral parts to the team’s success last season where they came within one win of the SCISA 3A semifinals. Wysong has attributes of a floor general where she can set up a team’s half court offense and be efficient with the ball in her hands. She will make tough shots in traffic and will hustle back to the defensive side after an offensive possession. Wysong knows how to handle the ball either in the open floor or in traffic and can connect on free throw opportunities in addition to her proficiency as a passer.
