This past weekend, a number of exceptional talents from throughout the region converged onto Wofford College for the Jimmy Garrity Team Camp. Located in Spartanburg, Wofford utilized two venues and five courts overall to accommodate the huge number of teams that made it to the South Carolina upstate for the weekend camp. Teams from both Carolinas as well as Georgia, Tennessee and Virginia all took part. Prep Girls Hoops made it to the event as well. Here is a look at a few standouts from the class of 2022 that impressed at Wofford. [player_tooltip player_id="158920" first="Alexia" last="Grant"] – First Baptist – Whenever [player_tooltip player_id="158920" first="Alexia" last="Grant"] is on the court, expect her to do [player_tooltip player_id="158920" first="Alexia" last="Grant"] things. Some of those include being confident in her ability to knock down the 3-pointer. They also include a high hoops IQ and an ability to receive passes in the low post and convert high-percentage shots. Grant will drive into the hoop and make tough shots against a number of defenders and can absorb contact en route to the free throw line. With how she gets to the cup, Grant can be creative with her shot selection and will give a team hustle plays as well. As much as she can hit the 3, she has no problem passing up looks from downtown to dish the rock out to a teammate. [player_tooltip player_id="297083" first="Airez" last="Fobbs"] – Rock Hill HS – Fobbs has been a key to Rock Hill’s success as of late. Last week at the Francis Marion camp, she put in a good deal of work as part of the Bearcats’ game in the post. At the Wofford camp, she was an integral part of the Bearcats bench as Rock Hill was involved in one of the more competitive contests of the Saturday camp with Providence Day. She made a 3-point bucket at the end of the first half in the game with the Chargers as Rock Hill rallied from behind to assume a 14-12 lead at the half. [player_tooltip player_id="190144" first="Makayla" last="Street"] – Rock Hill HS – Street is hard to beat. A constant double-double threat on a game by game basis, Street excels both in terms of scoring points and grabbing rebounds. Along with teammate [player_tooltip player_id="297083" first="Airez" last="Fobbs"], she adds to the depth that coach Kennan Orr’s Bearcats present. Rock Hill closed the camp at Wofford with a game vs. Providence Day at the main court at Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium. Street entered that game off the bench and showcased the strides she has made throughout her career on the glass. Along with what she does on the boards, she is also a threat to steal the ball and block shots. Alondra Black – Dorman HS – While offense may be what gets plenty of attention in basketball nowadays, stopping the other team from scoring is as every bit as important as your team running it up on the scoreboard. Black turned in one of the more impressive defensive performances this past weekend at the Wofford camp. She not only made it difficult for teams to score on her, she showcased an ability to intercept and deflect passes as well as come up with big steals to create opportunities for the Cavaliers to turn defense into offense. Black also did work on both the defensive and offensive glass as well as helping her team with high-percentage shots near the rim in addition to getting to the free throw line. [player_tooltip player_id="247778" first="Alaysia" last="Nash"] – Eastside HS – Lots of Nashketball has been played as of late at Eastside. Last season, she was the Eagles’ leading scorer averaging 17.3 points per game. As much of a scorer as she is, Nash is also a ball distributor. She can display creativity with her shot selection and gave her team plenty of opportunities in the mid range game. She showcased a long range game as well. Nash is not afraid to draw her fair share of contact and is active on the glass. She is a hustler who does not give up on loose balls and has a confidence where she believes she can make things happen with the ball in her hands. Defense is also a central emphasis of her game and her development. [player_tooltip player_id="171771" first="Tiana" last="Spann"] – First Baptist – Prep Girls Hoops has seen Spann a great deal this offseason between the recent offseason camps First Baptist has participated in and seeing TMP’s 17U team on the travel circuit. In fact, the Wofford camp was the second time we have seen Spann and First Baptist in a week. Spann is tenacious on the boards. She knows post play can be very physical at times so she will attract plenty of contact and she will find herself at the stripe. With her presence in the paint, scoring on her is anything but easy as she is extremely adept at rejecting an opposing team’s shots.
