Wofford College in Spartanburg was the site of the Jimmy Garrity Team Camp which saw teams represented from several states – including Georgia, Tennessee and Virginia along with both Carolinas. There were plenty of junior varsity teams that were on hand as well as varsity squads.
Prep Girls Hoops also were on hand in Spartanburg this previous weekend for what was a scintillating day of girls basketball. A number of this past season’s sophomores brought their A-games with them to the South Carolina upstate. Here is a look at a few that showed up and showed out.
Grace Ikenegbu Grace Ikenegbu 5'11" | PF T.L. Hanna | 2023 State SC – TL Hanna HS – Representing the Yellow Jackets, Ikenegbu shined like the gold on T.L. Hanna’s uniforms. One of the games T.L. Hanna played was vs. Spartanburg and she made her presence known throughout – particularly in the low post. Even though her primary position is at the five, she showed that she will take chance with her mid range and long range game as well. Ikenegbu managed to grab plenty of rebounds and more often than not wins rebounding battles. She is difficult to get points on as she plants herself near the basket on defense waiting to either get a rebound or reject a shot. Ikenegbu will also draw attention with the ball in her hands, freeing up open teammates.
Clara Gramling – Chapman HS – Gramling is coming off a 2020-21 season where she claimed All 3A Region 3 honors. Her play displays exactly why – and why more accolades are in her future. Gramling is a very court-aware player who seems to be consistently in the right place at the right time with a high basketball IQ. She will absorb contact and make shots at the free throw line. Gramling is a tough defender that will take advantage of an opponent’s ball handling miscue to conjure up a steal. She can get out in transition after her team forces a turnover to convert that defense into offense. Gramling is also a proficient passer and has no problem trying 3-point shots.
Brooke Kelley – TL Hanna HS – Brooke has the faces of T.L. Hanna fans who watch her and the Yellow Jackets play wearing smileys. Being a left-hander is a distinguishing skill in a sport where being right-handed is close to the norm. Along with being a southpaw, she has displayed a proficiency with the 3-point shot. Kelley puts her versatility on display as she is able to play either the guard or forward spots. One can tell that she works aplenty at sharpening and improving her game.
Kimyah Foggie – Legacy Early College – The outlook for Foggie appears to be crystal clear – basketball sunshine. Prep Girls Hoops most recently got a glimpse of Foggie last week at the camp at Francis Marion. Listed as a small forward and wing, that bright outlook can particularly appear on defense. Foggie can grab a good bit of rebounds and those boards she claims on the offensive glass can potentially turn into two-point put backs. She is also skilled at coming away with steals and has the ability to reject shots.
