New Faces of the Travel Season
By Michael Wholey 7/9/21 1:00 PM EST
There are a number of familiar faces with new uniforms. We take a look at who has changed travel teams this spring/summer.
Class of 2022
Kyla Abraham Kyla Abraham 6'5" | PF Smithfield (VA) | 2022 State FL (Choctowatchee HS / Miami Suns) 6’4
Abraham has been on the travel season before mainly with Georgia travel teams. She hooked up with the Miami Suns this spring/summer and has immediately got the attention of a number of college coaches immediately becoming one of the hot prospects. At 6’4 she has a huge wingspan and is very long as well as extremely athletic. She impacts the game as a shot blocker and rebounder with a raw offensive skillset that is developing. The combination of those things make her a very unique prospect and extremely coveted.
Janay Quinn Janay Quinn 5'2" | PG Miami Sr. HS | 2022 State FL (Miami Senior HS / Miami Suns) 5’6 Guard
Quinn has mainly stayed local playing with her high school team during the spring/summer. She switched over to the Miami Suns Team Fowles this year and immediately made her presence back in April at the Sunshine State Showdown showcasing her quick first step, ability to get to the rim, and pesky defensive presence. Do not let her height deceive you, Quinn is a big-time scorer or impacts the game on both the offensive and defensive end who has stretches of games where she has single handedly created 8-0 and 10-0 runs.
Class of 2023
Tyra Brown Tyra Brown 6'2" | SF Fort Myers | 2023 State FL (Fort Myers HS / Candice Dupree Phenoms) 6’1
Brown’s 6’1 frame is extremely intriguing to college coaches because it fits in perfect with the modern-day style of basketball that most college teams are playing. Brown is long, athletic, and versatile. She can play multiple positions and her height allows her to impact that game on both the offensive and defensive end. On offensive, she has solid handle and does a great job attacking from the perimeter off the dribble. Her height allows her to see over defenses as a passer as well as shoot and finish at the rim over the top of defenses.
Rhema Collins Rhema Collins 6'2" | SF Webb(TN) | 2023 TN (Schoolhouse Prep / Miami Suns) 6’1 Forward
Collins immediately jumped onto the travel scene in April for the Miami Suns and then returned to her native Bahamas in May and June. She is back on the scene in July with Miami Suns Team Fowles. She can play both the wing and forward spot, is a big-time athlete with major hops. Her offensive game is a bit raw, but it is obvious that it is a work in progress, and it is developing. She is one of the spring/summers hot prospects due to her athleticism, build and potential. It will be fun to see her development over the next 2 years.
Class of 2024
Fenishka Bertho (North Miami HS / Miami Suns) 6’3
Bertho has played 17U, 16U, and 15U this spring/summer making her presence known on all 3 age levels. She has a personality and demeanor are on the quiet and shy side and hold her back a little bit. As her physicality and aggression increase, so will her productivity. Her height alone makes her one of the state’s most intriguing young prospects and top bigs.
Tyra Blue (Everglades HS / FGB Runnin’ Rebels) 5’10
Blue is big guard / wing who I first got a chance to see at The Bump Basketball Showcase in May. Her build and length are extremely intriguing and grab your attention quickly when sitting down and watching a Runnin’ Rebels game. She has followed up a solid Spring with a great start to July at the Summer Tip Off in Indiana.
Channing Warren Channing Warren 6'3" | C Timber Creek | 2024 State FL (Timber Creek HS / Blue Star Orlando) 6’3
Warren was a new face for me as I had heard the name but had not had the chance to see her play live yet. The 6’3 center is extremely long and has a ton of potential. She impacts the game as a rebounder and shot blocker. She moves well for her size. She is unique in that many bigs impact the game as a shot blocker and rebounder but are underdeveloped skill wise. Warren is a young post prospect whose skill is ahead of the curve and still has her best basketball ahead of her as she continues to work on her game and get stronger and grow into her body. Remember the name – Channing Warren Channing Warren 6'3" | C Timber Creek | 2024 State FL – definitely one of 2021 spring/summer hot prospect names and one that college coaches will be following for the next 3 years!
Class of 2025
Jim’Miyah Branton (Slam! Miami / Miami Suns) 5’6
Branton was a prospect that I had heard of and seen some highlights of as she was SLAM! Miami leading scorer this past season as an 8th grader averaging 12.5 points per game. Finally getting a chance to see her play live was a pleasure. At 5’6 with a slender frame, her build is not the most imposing to opponents, but she impacts the game immediately and plays hard and aggressively on both ends of the floor from tip off to the final buzzer. She is most effective in up tempo games where she can pressure the ball on the defensive end and play in transition on the offensive game.
Sara Blair (Dillard HS / GT Queens) 6’5
Take a stroll over to warm-ups prior to a GT Queens game and your eyes will immediately go to Sara Blair! Blair is 6’5 with mass and has yet to play a high school game. The young prospect is raw and a project that will need to develop her game over the next few years to ultimately become a consistent productive player on both the offensive and defensive end but she has a great starting base. At 6’5, you simply cannot teach height and her mass and strong lower body make her near impossible to move from the paint when she is five feet and in from the rim. I loved the fact that she played hard and ran the floor. Keep an eye on Sara Blair!
